Battery Under the Quarter Berth

submarines have HUGE batteries that are wet cells, they all vent into the "people tank" part of the boat, which is of course totally enclosed and full of things that make heat and sparks

so far they don't appear to be blowing up

I love you man, but that is really not correct.

Hydrogen gas in submarines was a HUGE problem, when recharging. The batteries used closed cell systems, and the hydrogen gas was routed to the engine intakes, where it was "used" to supplement the propulsion/charging systems. Batteries only gas hydrogen while recharging or melting down.

both my boats have the batteries in the people place of the boat--i am still alive....

To the GROUP - look, I'm sorry for being a n a l on this. The chances that YOU will have a problem with a flooded battery, are small. HOWEVER, I could not in good conscience, recommend a flooded cell battery/batteries in a living area. If you do, how would you feel in the rare circumstance that one actually caused a fire?

HOWEVER, we DID have a situation with our old AGM batteries last December. I just can't imagine what would have happened if those AGMs had been flooded cells, and gone thru the same meltdown. The fumes from the AGMs were bad enough.

This made the decision to come back with AGMs a "no brainer".

I really appreciate this great forum and all the time devoted to it. I hope one day to be able to contribute rather than just ask questions.
I think I will go with dedicating an area in the cockpit for a ventilated battery compartment. It is easy for me at this point in my modifications to err on the side of caution.
