Battery Box Ventalation

I've read about all I can stand on the ventilation of a large battery bank and am looking for some real world advice.

I'll have 6-6v (300amp) lifeline AGMs (total 900amp at 12v) installed in an almost square block with about a 1/2 space around them for air circulation.

My Alternator is a Balmar 210amp...regulated w/Balmer MC-612-H
I'll have temp sensors on both the alt. and the batteries.

I'll install an explosion proof fan up stream (blowing into the box) near the bottom of the box, with a ducted exhaust opening near the top to carry the heat etc. away from my fuses and other elect. connections.
Haven’t found the fan yet...low profile...any suggestions?

I know that if the batteries get hot enough the valves will open and they will gas...And the gas is toxic, explosive and corrosive.

The question is, how necessary is it that the exhaust actually vents to the exterior of the boat.

Thanks

Not that necessary if they vent into a space that is itself ventilated and does not have electrical equipment that isn't ignition protect. The point is hydrogen dissipates extrememly fast. Even a very small hole in the top of a battery box is enough to vent hydrogen. Venting to the atmosphere is best but if not a good option, can be vented to a compartment, that is vented to the atmosphere. It appears that the box is inside a compartment that is part of the living quarters for the boat (hard to tell from the photo) You could simply snake a hose or tube from the top of the box to the outside. That would do the job.

Thanks Ike
I was thinking to have the fan pulling air from the space between the cabnets and the hull, pushing into the lower back side of the box.
I was hoping I couls vent directly through the side of the box (near its top) into the living area..I also thought that the gas dialutes/disipates fast...
I have a lot of volumn of air in the cabin.
What do you think?

If you use a fan it needs to be ignition protected. That is, have an electric motor that doesn't produce a spark.

Well I don't like the idea of it going into the cabin. Too many sources of ignition. lights, stoves, electronics, smokers. etc.
