Average Cost to Go Solar / Wind on Sailboat ?

I am just trying to get an average price, for an average sailboat to go solar/wind power. I will want a few luxeries, like computer, sat TV.

I already know the price range I am going to buy for my sailboat. Its going to be anywhere between a 26' but more likely a 28' to a 34', and yeah el-cheapie, single handed setup, liveaboard.

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

Depends on the units you use, and who does the installations. I have 2 185 watt panels, and a KISS generator for under $2k........i2f

Those are pretty decent prices. I thought for sure I was going to run into the $4K+ range.

Like everything else, it depends! :-) It is highly dependent on your do-it-yourself and scrounging skills (as opposed to buying off the shelf and highering the work).

In really round numbers for a scrounger/do-it-yourself type, I would expect at least $1000 for the wind gen and $1500 for ~260 watts of solar.

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

Solar Panels As Low As 98 Per Watt

I paid 15 months ago $384 each for 185 watt panels with company name. Kiss is about $1100 now. Add some rails, and mounts to the bimini. A mast for the generator, and you have $2k if you install yourself.

The black plastic clamps are from SEA DOG, and the clamp on fitting I just googled. That info is not on this computer, but easy to find.....i2f

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

Hopefully if it is a cruising boat. It will already have a couple of good house batteries. If not those can be had too for cheap. You just got to shop around......i2f

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

my system was cheap--i got second hand panels and i used my own regulator, which now has died and needs replaced-- but i was gifted a 130 wtt panel for free and i bought 3 others for less than 50 dollars each. my regulator is online for 89 dollars. i will buy 2 this time, they are 20 amp regulators.as these seem to only last 6 yrs, i will have a spare.
i am seeking a marine or non marine air-X wind genny,
so far even with failures being changed out, is less than 1000 dollars.

Maybe but it is something that he has to consider which is my point. Also he might need additional capacity depending what he plans on running which could mean additional wiring, switch, etc.. How about an Inverter?

Will he also need an a larger charger to handle what might be his increased needs?

How about a controller to handle the solar and wind?

Is the 12 VDC panel up to the job according to his needs?

There are a lot that goes in to setting up a 12VDC system for cruising. He asked for things to consider and these are things to consider.

He might be lucky to get everything he needs in the boat he buys but he also might not.

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

I forgot the controlller. I bought one with the panels, and it was an additional $150 for a 40 amp xantrex if memory serves me correctly. My point b eing that alll the time costs are quoted here, when in reality if you do some brainwork, and backwork with some shopping around. It never has to be that expensive. Same output panels at West Marine was almost triple......i2f

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

Very timely topic, for me. I've been shopping solar panels in Vancouver, L.A., and on the 'net. The 'net - Ebay, etc - seems to have prices of about 50% retail. I'd build my own panels & save a lot more, but time is a factor. I've replaced my batteries with new - 1start, 2house - and figure that I could queeze by on 80W, but am targetting 160W, expecting 50% rated performance. I am running usual boatlights, S.H. vhf/AIS(GX2150), S.H. Plotter/ff(CPF180i) and a 700W inverter.
Am I a cock-eyed optimist? I figured that I can always add more panel in Hawaii, if I find the 160W too small. With a 30' narrow mono, there isn't a lot of deck or rail space to sacrifice.
(I'd sure like to have zeehag doing my panel shopping for me!)

Edit: And an old tiller pilot for motoring, to complement my Aries.

Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

if you wish to save money, do NOT buy at a chandlery!!!!!!!
and definitely shop around. my brother is good now he is finally grown up, and likes to shop--go figger-- and i hatre it, so i put in requests to find stuff to him, and his gf says he has a ball finding me stuff..LOL.. gotta love younger sibs -- if ye let em grow up, some actually turn out ok!! but he found my exact regulator for 89 dollars--i found it at 150 about 6 or so yrs ago. yay, bro!!!
i plan on making 2 biminis for this mono--one over the helm seat and one over companionway for the solar setups. wind--- prolly higher up on mizzenmast....
