Re: Average cost to go solar/wind on sailboat?

I plan on making the mount when I fab my davits. Question for the cruisers. Would the system benefit from installing a solar tracker? Or would the swing of the boat just drive the tracker crazy. You could of course decrease sensitivity and gain to dampen the effects.??

Forget about the tracker. The only cruiser on this forum that could benefit from one is Gord and that's only because he's a C.L.O.D.

As Ausieman said forget the tracker, but if you can make them manually adjustable in 1 or even better 2 axes you will get considerably more power.

And will quickly consume WAY more power than can be replaced with solar

Also, as far as pricing goes, West Marine will price match ANY legit deal. And they'll guarantee the lowest price for 30 days to boot! So in fact everything you get from them should be the best deal you ever got.

*Full disclosure I work @ WM.

Does that include prices online from overseas vendors?

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it.
We're a small market in global terms.

Buying online can often be cheaper, but you do need to be confident in the product, and the source.

We're in Bristol as well and are considering the same wind gen. Who installed it for you? How effective has it been in the local conditions?
TIA.

Very effective. Keeps everything operating. I have TV, inverter - as well as all the standard navigation equipment.

It keeps up with the fridge as well - as long as I am doing some motoring along with the sailing - but I Turn the fridge off when we are not on the boat. Not sure if it would keep up on a daily basis unattended.

There were some times when it wasn't windy where we had to conserve power and run the engine out of gear.

Cape Yachts in Dartmouth did the install.

Good to know. I've noticed that the Air Breeze is becoming very common in the mooring field. I wanted to be sure it wasn't only because Bristol Marine installed them.

I'm guessing that this is in reference to my post? I don't think I need 700W, but I am carrying power tools & want to make sure that the juice is there, if needed. I'm presently installing 1 start & 2 house batts, but may add one more house. I plan to mostly anchor out when in Mexico & other areas and have a couple of friends flying down to meet us in Maz, who want to dive specific areas in Sea of Cortez. The most honest answer, however, is that it was the "right price" and I'm too lazy to work out all of my electrical needs/capabilities/etc., so I dropped it in the shopping cart as I went past the sale display.

Re: Average Cost to Go Solar / Wind on Sailboat ?

my installation cost a total of $5,000, with a a fabrication shop building and installing a custom arch for the solar but with me doing all the wiring as well as installing a mast for the wind generator. I ended up with two 130-amp solar panels plus a 200-amp wind generator, which is adequate for my needs.
