Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

Hi,

I am offered for low cost a used Aerogen wind generator.
Age unknown.

Anyone know which model this is (see pic).

What are things to look out for?
Do they have a reasonable output?

What offer shall I put in?

Thanks again.

Looks like an Aerogen 4 but from that kind of distance hard to be sure..
They are excellent.. very quiet, reliable and easy to maintain.. currently selling new for around £950 in the UK.. had one for 4yrs on a former 31ft boat I sailed round the Med.. always well charged up.
If it has no manual you can download one of the web.

Re: Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

I have the aqua4aerogen.... I'm sure it would have the same insides in a different case.
Good honest unit, easy to service, I have to change the bearings about every 6 or 7 years but that may be down to using it in towed mode.

Manual here https://www.unavco.org/projects/proj...gen_manual.pdf

Sure does look like one to me..
Though the Aerogen 6 is very similar.. but whichever of the 2 you've a great wind generator.. the '6' delivers more performance/output..
Either way a good buy and simple to maintain.

The diameter of the fan will tell whether 4 or 6.

Re: Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

Hey boaty thanks! Will make an offer as soon I have my next job lined up.
It's a 4 but my power requirements are humble. Got space left for more solar as well, just not so handy for topping up in a windy night.

Cheerio,

Franziska

Re: Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

I concur with above posters. I had one for years on the boat and still have that Aerogen 4 (now in the shed), although output is not that much and I was always eying off a '6' model, but that was really too big for that boat's stern (34 ft).
It all depends on your power requirement and if you have solar or other charging methods. Never had any problems, I was living on board and lashed it only for storms over 35-40 knots.

Where's Stu??? Here's a glaring misuse of electrical units for him to jump on:

What the hell does that mean? 300AH is 300 Ampere Hours, a meaningless statement about a wind generator. does it mean the Aerogen 4 will supply 300 ampere hours in a day, a week, a century?? Or does it mean appropriate for a 300 ampere hour battery bank? And what wind strength is involved? It would be appropriate to tell a prospective customer the output in Amperes at some given windspeeds, like most windgen vendors do.

Bah, Humbug!

There! My rant for the day...

Jim
300 AH ( or is that aH or maybe Ah?) is what the 4 will give you in a period of 24 hours if you are hove to and the wind speed is hovering around 30 knots per hour.

I'm trying to get to sleep here, Jim , I wish you wouldn't stir the possum like this. ( I had to get out of bed , go to the chartroom and do sum somes, to get you this info.......used to use mine as a wind instrument .. still have a little conversion table - amps/wind speed - taped to the bulkhead next to the dedicated ammeter....

Re: Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

Hi guys,

despite the missuse of units I figure already that the numbers are an output approximation without to much Info at what wind speed we are talking, typical manufacturing bu.. 😃

NOW WHAT WOULD BE INTERESTING, would be a photo of the little wind speed to Amp table el Pinguino has taped to his bulkhead.

Great to hear that these windgens seem to be a viable alternative to the expensive Silentwinds, at least for the Budget concious amongst us.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone know how these Aerogen wind gensets are?

It looks like the 4 to me. We have the 6 and the blades look longer in proportion to the body. The 6 is a great bit of kit, reliable and very, very quiet. Probably not as powerful as some of the newer designs out there and takes a lot of wind to get it putting out much power, but it all helps.

If it is the 6, then whatever you do, believe the manual when they tell you it must NOT be left unattended. I figured they were being neurotic, so left mine untethered and shorted out in electrical braking mode. Got hit by a storm which melted the brush pack and fried the rectifier (max 500 volt rectifier btw, that's food for thought)

The exercise cost me $100 and it was a lesson well learned. Read the manual and BELIEVE the manual.
