Re: any point in even attempting....

I never try to salvage a battery. You might get it to work for a short time if you were lucky, but it could fail you when you need it most. I never skimp on batteries.

Re: any point in even attempting....

You could try but as Maxingout says, do not rely on it. If it is more than about five years old or it has been discharged for a long period of time then chances are pretty high that it is shot.

If it's supposed to be a 12v battery, I would say definately NOT. If I remember right, a 12v batter will normally show a voltage slightly higher than 12v and is considered dead at around 10.5-11v. Anything less will be damaging and wouldn't be worth trying to revive. Trying to charge could possibly cause it to explode.

You can put it on a charger overnight and check voltage in the morning. Like the above say don't use as your only starter, it could fail at anytime. I did this with an old deep cycle, and used it as a trolling motor for dinghy for over a year after it was "dead". Sometimes they come back, but the plates are probably sulfated, and flaking.
