Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

No need to reinvent the wheel.

Building up a v.axis wind generator looks easy. I 'd install two when on hook, between shrouds.
They'd look like aluminium cylinders

With a light alternator (10-15A), inside an IP66 METAL BOX, would it go?

I find ordinary ones, horizontal axis, of low efficiency, outlpriced, noisy and encumbering /dangerous/awful at view.

Alas, l have little notion of electro-mechanics.... :-)

Re: Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

My doubt is all about proportionating physical size of wings to the alternator rate.
At a certain wind range (with a friction, not a stupid cut-off beyond 30kn of wind...)

It should have a fixed V DC output, easy to install and to set away..

Am l expecting too much? Not as complicate as a Huygens probe... I hope !

Re: Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

like everything else on a boat it has to be rated for storm winds, the turbine could start to throw shrapnel in a microburst, you would have to test it on a lathe

Re: Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

Aluminium make
Small diameter /angular speed

Leading Edge is some 45cm long and 25cm OD

But 800 GBP for 11W in F4 is for sultans only. Therefore, DIY, if someone is capable of identifying the right components (alternator of say 10A max 12V)

ideal complement in windy overcast days...

Re: Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

There are a number of available PMA BLDC LOW RPM GENERATORS...(Brushless DC Permanent Magnet 3-phase)

Missouri and RockHydro among others...
We need a technician able to identify the Whole set of components, for a standard removable pipe, say 11" OD and 1' 1/2 to 2' 1/2 overall length (removable).

Under compensation upon receiving executable info, why not..

Before you dive in head first take a look at this video which describes the benefits and pitfall of VAWTs.

Be sure it is easily removed for storm prep.

Due to their very design, VAWTs suck and are very inefficient. Don't even bother. The most efficient wind gens are 5 or 7 blades, AC output with a AC to DC regulator/controller.

I wont start a battle on how many blades is most efficient. There is a lot of science documented on this so a moot point.

If the commercial manufacturers can only get 11w out of one, how are you going to generate 10A from something 45cm in height?

If you want 10A then its a 45" x 30" solar panel, or a Honda.

My Superwind 350 gives me ten amps quite often and is silent.

Re: Any DIY WIND GENERATOR? - vertical axis

Actually I plan to do something similar as the Duogen: wind or water, depending which one is better at a certain situation. Doesn't have to be so fancy as the Duogen: a simply replaceable alternator would do that I move to the wind turbine once anchored (=no more hydroelectric available.)
