Sorry gents, but what I have is an analog meter that was working, but was a mystry to me how, until you all explained that what I thought was a bus bar for a terminal that was too crowded was actually a shunt I am indebited to your shared knowlage thank you.

Just a couple of things digital amp meters can be designed to read positive line or negative line shunts. The primary reason a shunt is in the negative is for safety.

Multimeters certainly digital ones can of course measure millivolts very accurately. Older analogue meters struggled but no one uses these anymore

Some of you guys need to read up on ohms law. When using a shunt you are reading volts across the shunt which as previously stated is in the terms of milliamps. I personally don't see how a shunt on the negative side of the battery is any safer than one on the positive. Please convince me
