Re: Alternator Wiring Help

The red/yellow/purple wire is probably the excite from the ignition switch. Very necessary!

Re: Alternator Wiring Help

I'd put some clamps on the water strainer first

Re: Alternator Wiring Help

Oh yes, I see what you mean. Should even be double-clamped.

Re: Alternator Wiring Help

If you are keeping the low output automotive alternator then a ground wire is probably not necessary, the current will be carried through your alternator frame, engine block and back through the main ground wire. However if you are wiring your boat the way it really should be so that you can upgrade your alternator in the future then add a ground wire. Your upgrade will probably also include a shunt and an ammeter/battery monitor. The ground wire can attach to the alternator frame where the capacitor mount bolt is, at the bottom left of your photo.

Nice spot on the hose clamp issue.

This is helpful. I'm planning on keeping the present alternator, so I'll keep the present alternator grounding set up until I decide to upgrade or it fails. I now understand the alternator wiring much better thanks to this thread.

Don't worry about the hose clamps. I had to remove my water pump to replace the seals and had a problem with a restricted seacock that I'm also addressing. I have until March 24 to get everything in shape.

I was given 1980 Pearson 30 a year ago. Focused on getting the engine running last winter prior to a great summer of sailing and now have this present charging project, rudder bushing repairs, water pump and other little things. It's good that I enjoy working with my hands and have people like you on the internet to help me along. Thanks.
