Question Alternator Failure, Cooling Leak

Hi
First

I have a Yanmar 3GM30F engine with a Hitachi (assumed 55 amp, there are no numbers or marking to identify it) alternator which do not charge the batteries. No charging for weeks, had to go to home port in the middle of the vacation(could not start, 11.53 volt on the batteries)). What is the likelihood that the alternator is broken and can I replace the unit with any 55-60 amps alternator given that it fits in the brackets?

Second

The "fresh" water cooling system have started to leak at the pump axel ( not the raw water). Is compleat replacement of pump the only option or is there a easier way to solve the leak?

Best regard POE

You can mount any alternator you want as long as it fits in the bracket. Just make sure that the pulley is not further forward or aft, ie. it lines up with the crankshaft and water pump pulleys (same plane).

You can rebuild the water pump yourself but it is a pain. Easier to get a new one and throw the old one in your spare parts bin, you never know one day it you may need it.
