Alternator conversion, internal to external regulator

Hi

I plan to convert an old Delco style alternator with an internal D101HD regulator, to external regulation using an MC614H.

Is it basically just to connect one side of the field winding to ground, and the other directly to the field connector on the MC614H?

And then just connect the MC614H power, ground, ignition and voltage sense "as usual"?

The D101HD regulator is removed of course. And the field diode trio is also not needed then, right?

Re: Alternator conversion, internal to external regulator

I have done this. Works great. You'll be converting from negative field regulation to positive regulation, but I think you know that.
I left the old reg in place but bent a connector to tie one side of the field to ground and disable the reg. It all fit back together more easily that way. i also hijacked a connector wire (light?) to become the positive side feed from the Balmar. I'll have to check my notes, but I think I removed the field diodes.
You may want to throttle the Balmar VR as it will drive the alt pretty hard.
