Alternatives to the Balmar 614 regulator

Hi all,

My Balmar 614 alternator regulator went out. After some google searching, I am not finding a whole lot of alternatives. The 614 is not repairable because of the epoxy (which aids in waterproof).

The high costs of external regulators in general is disappointing for what they do. High cost MPPT solar controllers do more for the same costs.

This leads me to ask the question, what are some of the other external alternator regulators out there with similar features that do not have negative reviews online like the Balmar? With reasonable pricing (subjective)? After the Balmar's failure, I am skittish to replace it with the same.

Sterling keeps popping up but I cannot find any reviews.

Thanks Guys

Alternatives to the Balmar 614 regulator

Mark Grasser

Contact him, he may can rebuild it, and he does sell Alt's etc. Just google his name,
Sorry noticed your talking external regulator, anyway I run his and have been very pleased, price is good for what you get too, in my opinion.

The Sterling was almost plug and play. I don't like setting things up and it didn't need much. I'm happy.

Thanks Guy for the field report on Sterling.

a64pilot - interesting lead for Mark Grasser. For that price, I will give them a try and test the system.

Re: Alternatives to the Balmar 614 regulator

I've had very good luck with my Mark Grasser controller, it's AGM setting is exactly what my lifeline batteries call for, and I like the force to float switch, no point in running batteries at absorption voltage if they are 100% charged, plus as you say the price is attractive
