A Honda Generator and Below Deck Outlets

When my boat is hooked up to shore power, all the outlets inside work just fine. When I fire up the inverter, all the outlets work just fine. When I hook up the Honda Generator(comes in through the same inlet as the shore power), all the outlets on the starboard side no longer work and the"reverse polarity" light lights on the circuit panel when I turn on the starboard side outlets switch.
Makes no sense to me as to what is happening but it sure is weird.
