Re: 1400 Ah Lithium from cells

above are some altrnatives, the 123bms and the ecs lipro modules are programmable, the litrade is a simple one pre set for lyfeypo4 protection and top balancing. All 3 are passive top balancing bms, while the REC is an active balancing system with continous watching the cell differences. Sorry for the ugly post, the app editor and touch keyboard have limitations on editing.

the 123bms is slightly cheaper than the REC, you use a smartphone as display and for programming, 123bms and ecs lipro are daisy chain cell module bms, the REC and the litrade are one box devices with only sense wires to the cells.

i am sure, there are more solutions around, this are the common used in germany.

Re: 1400 Ah Lithium from cells

Finaly the system is on board now and working as expected. Now running some tests, stay tuned.

LiFeYPO4 bank is running flawlessly and the Victron Quattro delivers all the power I need. Still refitting the boat.

Some minor issues I found are, when using the Quattro as transfer switch, one must run the Inverter to have the shorepower transfered.. Also the Victron uses a lot of power when in hot standby...

Love the LFP... Soo much better than the GEL batteries...

Thanks for the update!

That seems very odd to me. Have you confirmed that is by design?

Re: 1400 Ah Lithium from cells

Seems so. There is the small switch on the unit: Charger / Off / Inverter. Power from shore is only transferred to output 1 if the victron is set to inverter. Then the unit detects the power on Input 1 or Input 2 and switches accordingly, if power on the inputs shuts, the inverter kicks in. Same for the PowerAssist.

When the inverter is off, (either Charger only or Off position of the main switch) there is no power on the 220V outputs.

So the Victron must be set to Inverter to enable the transfer-switch.

Without the Power saving functions of the inverter (modified sine wave or impulses) the inverter draws 3 - 4A continously, with power saving around 2 - 3A, but most electronic devices do not like the power saving either.

So here are the options. Either you turn the Victron on only if you really want 220V (for cooking, watermaker or warm water) or you accept 100Ah/day power draw for 220V stand-by.

With my solar it is doable and does not hurt, but it adds to the cycling of the LFP - at least during the night.

It is 9.40 am, slightly cloudy and the solar yelds 50A, peaks over 60. So at noon the LFP will be full again.

Will continue testing during the week. Turned off the shore power and use all systems on board (galley, lights, entertainment) like at home, inverter on all the time, to see if solar only will be sufficient.

I have done the same test before the refit - propane galley, 3 fridges / freezer , light and entertainment on battery, needed around 400Ah / day. The fridges alone draw 17A.

Re: 1400 Ah Lithium from cells

There is another way for wiring using the Quattro as an inline- inverter by connecting the output to the shore power. Then shore power goes directly to the outlets and the Quattro yelds power to compensate part of the consumed energy. However this is for PV fixed grid shore installations, I guess it is not appropriate for a yacht.

Hi CNB,

This isn’t correct, our shore power / genset supplies 230v direct with the Quattro set to ‘charger only’.

We turn on the Quattro first thing in the morning and leave it on until around 10pm when I switch to ‘charger only’. I do this from the Color Control.

Hope this helps

Re: 1400 Ah Lithium from cells

I will try this, thanks.
I tried in the off position to bypass the Quattro and it does not work, dont tried charger only.

I do exactly the same with our Quattro. Works well.

Though its often done from my phone, browsing to the GX (which is awesome).

Rgds
