12VDC alternator part of an ONAN 6.5MDKD P

I need to replace the alternator section of a 50Hz 6.5Kw Onan MDKD P (Spec. 174C) generator. The rest of the Gen seems to work but with the alternator destroyed, the belt and cooling pump dont work neither so the whole thing is useless. Is there any chance to find just the 12V alternator part of this (more than 20yrs old) Gen?

Many thanks

I'd be surprised if the alternator was not an OEM ... your local alternator shop could probably tell you which one, and locate for you an appropriate replacement with and isolated negative return.

Alternatively the same alternator shop can probably rebuild it (or organise it) ... alternator rebuilding is quite a common occurrence.

Ditto jannw. I've had great success at small alternator shops for old alternators. The last one re-bored my old pulley to fit a currently available alternator - hallelujah!

Re: 12VDC alternator part of an ONAN 6.5MDKD P

I found that the stock alternators on my Onan gensets were nearly useless for anything more than maintenance on a small starting battery. I disabled them and permanently used the "shore power" charger to charge all the on-board batteries whenever the genset was running.

So if the alternator has just failed electrically, don't spend money on replacing it.
If it has failed mechanically then you may need to fix that enough to get your belt running.
