Your New To You Catamaran.........

Having bought a 2007 model Lagoon 440 catamaran some 6 months ago i've been going through it and checking all systems and fittings.

One thing i notice with the alloy spars, that is the forebeam, boom and mast is the total lack of any compound such as 'DURALAC' when fittings were fastened.

This lack of a corrosion preventative on threads in particular that terminate or go through aluminium means they seize and will likely break upon removal.

A word of warning it's much easier and convenient to try undoing these fasteners whilst in 'home-port', if they break then drill and use an 'easy-out', heat gently and hopefully remove BUT make sure your new fastener is coated with DURALAC or an equivalent.

To have fastenings in a seized state invites huge maintenance problems in the future and very likely in a foreign country where replacements are impossible to obtain. Don't take it for granted that because a rigging specialist built it that it'll be ok.....

Cheers Frank

Re: Your New To You Catamaran.........

Frank,

I am moored up in Gibraltar for the winter (just arrived) I will check mine out and look at a retrospective exercise of one in and one out, cleaning and Duralac.

This sounds like a worthwhile winter maintenance job.

How difficult would it be for the factory to do this from new??

Great boats but sometimes you wonder what Lagoons thought process is when they put them together.

Cheers Nige

Methinks none of the majors do things like this, i bet you have to drill them out... A majority of ours were seized (2007 model) DURALAC is now $50 a tube!!!!
You ought see the stuff we got in our suitcases for the trip back!!!!!!
Cheers Frank
