What blower/cooling fan for genset
Hi
The cooling fan for our Onan 11kva genset has quit, and I need to replace it. Current fan is an Italian make Osculati that has a 90 degree inlet/outlet.
Not sure if these are aftermarket or installed with all the L450 gensets. I cannot source these locally and would like to find out what other makes/brands of coolers people are using as hopefully might find these more readily available.
Can one switch to an inline blower or is there a specific reason why it is a 90 degree inlet/outlet one?
Thanks in advance.

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
Inline blower is ok if it suits your ducting direction. If your ducting is 78mm then look at the Vetus TWINLINEA, I have just installed one of these. Jabsco also make good blowers and the 90 deg type if you wish to stay with that layout. Just need to match the flow rate to be certain of compatability but generally if it suits the duct diameter the capacity should be ok.

There is a direct replacement from Johnson Pump, a continuous JOHNSON PUMP 80-47416-01 BILGE BLOWER available on line in USA for around $85 per unit, also fits the blowers on the engines.

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
450's are also fitted with a Jabsco 150CFM Blower (part nr 34739-0010) as our 2014 is. These motors are notorious for failing; we keep a spare. Good news is that they are readily available in many chandleries or on eBay.
There should be no reason why you can't go to an online one. But you will notice that there is an intake hose connecting the vent in the bow wall. And as we have noticed, spray or rain water enters this vent and can build up and reach the blower which is one reason it has a short life! You should ensure that this hose has a belly in it or a small hole at 6 o'clock to drain out any water.

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
I doubt you will find an inline blower that has enough CFM.
The 90 degrees is due to it being a squirrel cage blower, which moves a lot more air that a fan will.
Your airconditioner is almost always a squirrel cage blower too for instance

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
I have a 2012 450F with factory Onan 11k genny but without the exhaust fan. I imagine they (Lagoon) decided this is mandatory equipment? Or is it an option when buying the Genny? I wouldn't think so. Makes me think it could be wise to install some kind of ventilation? Anyone care to share?
Cheers
Mike

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
The Vestus blower I mentioned is rated at 5cubic meters/m which is just a tad higher than the Jabsco squirrel type blower that Emerald has installed so no problem with capacity. I dont have an Onan but looked at the setup on the 450 in Cannes. The blown hose supplies air for the generator air intake not cooling as it's water cooled. Another hose low on the side is the outlet, and I could not determine where this exited the hull so perhaps others can assist here, or if it was in fact blown.

Mike, if you're using your genset in the hot tropics it would be wise to add the blower. Its for getting a good air source to the air intake. When you order the genset from Lagoon, as we did, it came as part of the package. I can only guess that Lagoon realized later on that genny's were starving or other related problems. When you do get one, don't mount it on the shared salon/storage compartment wall as its noisy/vibrations - even with the rubber mounts. We relocated ours to a lateral wall and added additional rubber mounting - seems to help.

Pascal. There is a 2nd Jasbsco blower which is for sucking the air from the washer/dryer room (port side). There is a switch in the washer/dryer room to turn it on.
But I didn't answer your question (another hose low on the side of the outlet). In our system there is only one hose, as the one shown in your photo, that is connected to the blower.

One of the reasons for frequent failure of the Jabsco blower could be that it is rated for intermittent duty, not continuous duty. Two of the 3 Osculatis we had on our 2011 Lagoon failed at 1000 engine hours. The port one is still going at 2000 hrs. The replacement Johnson continuous duty blowers are still going strong at 1000 hr each so far. A continuous duty Jabsco is quite expensive and may not slot straight in.

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
Emerald this is the duct I was referring to, it appears to go through the locker floor with no visible blower in the locker at least. If you can make sense of the pic . Looking at the onan schematic it is connected at an air outlet? Good point made about continuous operation will have to check that

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
Sorry I got this wrong, the air inlet duct is the one going thru the floor with no obvious blower and this outlet duct goes across to the port locker where the blower/ extraction fan is located. Can any one explain where the duct thru the floor ends up and if it has a blower?

Re: What blower/cooling fan for genset
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions - much appreciated.
I am hoping to source the Johnsons blower mentioned by Bean Counter given it's a "plug n play" solution and also that it rated for continuous use vs the Osculati's intermittent use so hopefully will hold up a bit longer. Our genni is on 3000 hours so it did pretty well nontheless.
Dismantling our Osculati revealed corrosion which probably occurred as a consequence of the water ingress mentioned by Steve. We'll look to add the small hole to prevent this happening in future.
Thanks again for the prompt and useful responses :-)

Thanks for the heads up Steve. The list of "things to do" never goes away it seems.
