Things you can do with a Lagoon 450

Sometimes I think that yachts are simply designed for us to fix up and spend money on. However I have found another couple of uses:

I have been watching your channel on Youtube for a little bit now. Thanks for the videos from a different perspective.

Re: Things you can do with a Lagoon 450

I enjoyed watching the video.

I am curious about something. First, what kind of drone was used?

Pardon my ignorance on this next question: With the drone use, what happens to the drone when you reach the signal limit from the RC control limit?

Does it keep flying off (and then out of control), or does it sense the range limit and stay within a range of the boat or return towards the boat (controller) automatically?

Or is the range so great when on the open ocean that the operator would lose sight of the drone before the radio controller would lose control (out of range)? What is the manufacturer's recommended limit of operation (range)?

I don't own a drone. But I enjoy seeing the footage. In your second video the drone went pretty high and far from the boat. That is the reason for my question above.

Drones are cool. We might be buying one.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks everyone!
The drone is a DJI Phantom 4 pro. Fairly easy to fly and I only had flown it a few times before the yacht trip.

It has a return to home when the signal is lost. However that is a GPS position set when you take off (can update it to the controller position as you fly). Therefore safe to send away when anchored but probably the wrong position when sailing. The range is very good. I have had 5km but 3km it starts to weaken so no problem for chasing the yacht.

I flew it comfortably at anchor in 20kts wind. One return to the yacht at sail was hard because the stern was pitching more than I thought.

Take care, all countries have strict laws where you can fly and altitudes, typically 120m. But not a problem mid ocean. The drone will fly up to 500m above your position.

We used it to find the gap between the Reefs in the video below to take the dinghy through and dive/snorkel.

Cheers, Dave

Dave,
Thanks for answering my curiosity. That sounds very good.
Looks like a fun thing to have.

And, I think every boat looks nicer sailing, so seeing one's own boat from that POV is very nice.

Unfortunately I can't access youtube at the mo but looking forward to seeing these.

Be careful with the drone, I've crashed mine a couple of times and know of 3 that have dropped into the sea. They do NOT float!

I think you can buy a floating one now actually, but it's not DJI.

Re: Things you can do with a Lagoon 450

Great footage. Recently a friend of mine bought a new drone and chose to learn to fly it under sail. Selected beginner mode and launched it. The mode kept it geostationary so it dissapeared aft at 8kts. Panic to sail back within range before it auto landed in the South China Sea.

The man that shot the photo I have as my profile picture. Almost lost the drone trying to land it on the boat while sailing! Ended up crashing into the Genoa and it fell on the trampoline! Lucky he didn't put it in the drink!
So good Job Dave on the take off and landings!
