Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

Greetings all,

My wife and I are happy to say we are just purchased Lagoon 400 #320. We are taking delivery on 01 October 2013 at Les Sables d’Olonne. Actually the boat is ready now, but due to work commitments and the summer hurricane season we decided to sail it back next fall. The bright side is I can spend some time getting ready for the crossing, which brings me back to the thread…I’ve been looking for the correct dimensions for a symmetrical spinnaker for the L400. From Lagoon’s drawings and specs I can estimate luff lengths, but how about the foot, or overall sail area? I intend to use a snuffer or sock, which will also have to be correctly sized. I intend to find something in 1.5 ounce nylon. Any input from L400 owners will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

I just purchased #313.
I have ordered a Parasailor and it was 161sq/m.
Hope this helps.

I will be interested to hear how this sail goes, I have seen a you tube footage a while ago of a L400 doing 19 knots with such a sail. We have only added the screecher so far, which has almost paid for itself in fuel savings on our recent trip down the east coast.

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

I was speaking with the guy that supplied the parasailor for that L400 speedboat video. He told me the guy was using a 125m2, singlehanding across Biscay in 20-25 knots. Its a pity the whole video is just of the wake! He does seem to be moving along pretty well...
For reference they suggested 125m as the correct size for an L400, and the sizes either side of that depending how conservative you are and crew onboard. (110m2 or 140m2) We have ordered a 125m2 so we will report back once we try it out.

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

Thanks guys. Looking for a secondhand symmetrical spinnaker and need to know the luff and foot measurements for a sail of approx. 120 - 140 M2 for a L400.
Anyone measured their spinny?

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

Tuskie--

I ended up buying a used 2.5 oz. tri-radial, 51' luff, 26' foot. I'm not really sure how to measure the sail, but it is rather narrow up top. We call it "the Honey Badger" because it takes whatever we throw at it--I think we dropped it one time in 37 kt gusts...I purchased an ATN sock (I think 50' length, at Etienne's suggestion) which didn't give us much trouble, easy to douse single handed unless it's really blowing. We never matched the 19 kt Parasail video, but we did top out over 14 kts surfing down swells. Going deep the sail liked either a reefed main or none at all, and it was easier on the autopilot this way. All in all I would have like an extra 2-3 feet on the luff (foot length was ok), and different colors, but I couldn't complain about the price. After the Atlantic crossing the sail is a bit worse for wear (stretch marks from flying in too much wind, both luff tapes repaired), but I never thought the cloth was too heavy.

Now, who can advise me on the dimensions of an asymmetrical spinnaker for a Lagoon 400?!

Cheers, Bill

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

Thanks Bill. I'll look out for one that size or a bit longer in the luff.

Scottster, do you know the luff and foot dimensions of "Red"? It looks to be about 150 square metres? Plenty of horsepower there.

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

We have the same size as the YouTube 'speedboat' video and maximum speed was 16kn surfing in 35kn wind. I'm doubtful the speedboat vid is much over 12kn boat speed.

or speedboat user 'slightly' larger size. as i remember there was no showing of sail on video. strange that add for sail would not show sail in action?!

or maybe speed up video )

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

The parasailor rep told me he sold the guy (sailing solo) the same sizes we have (125m2)
The fastest we have sailed under PS is just over 15kn, but that was surfing 4-5m waves in 30+ TWS. Flat water with no weight on board I can imagine a consistent 12kn might be feasible, but maybe I'm wrong and maybe the wind was 40kn in the vid.

Re: Spinnaker size for Lagoon 400

Does anyone have a comparison between a "normal" gennaker and a Parasailor or Wingaker? Are the "Para" sails easier to use or any safer? What are the cons of a normal Genaker?
