sealing freezer

has anyone had any success in sealing the top access freezer?

the back of the freezer hatch has larger gaps and allows a lot of warm air in, causing the evaporator to ice up very quickly.

Very hard to say without seeing pictures of the hatch and the top/counter that it mates to. In general, creating a double seal provides the best insulation if you have the depth to do so as it creates a dead air space. If you have the room, consider using refrigerator door gasket material. If not, then you'll likely need to make your own solution with closed cell foam.

Re: sealing freezer

Are you sure the air leak is coming from the back of the lid? Have you checked inside the box where the evaporator lines and thermostat lines go through? On ours the hole was quite large compared to the lines and a huge amount of air got in through the opening. We sealed it up with foam rubber. In a pinch you could just shove a rag in there. Also, in the back of the freezer lid we added small pieces of foam to further help that seal. Now we get three to four months between defrostings.
