Problems with Anchor Roller System on 450

This season through wear and tear I have managed to wear a hole in the U shaped bracket that supports the bow roller on my L450.

The present design allows the chain to ride off the roller and rub the aluminium U bracket.

The proposal from my yard is to replace the whole aluminum channel with the two rollers with an Inox construction same design but 100mm longer with higher sides and 3 nylon rollers instead of 2 with - the idea being that the extra 100mm will get the chain away from the aluminium U bracket and the higher sides will prevent the chain from going off the rollers.

I hope you can understand my description as I don't have a drawing as we have just finished discussing this with the yard.

I would be interested in how anyone else may have resolved this problem

Re: Problems with Anchor Roller System on 450

On my ex 450, I installed a stainless U channel inside the aluminum one. The SS side lips were higher than the aluminum ones and they protected the aluminum channel and U bracket. The SS channel extended further forward also. I used the same rollers and same holes.

The SS fabricator used an existing anchor U channel and modified it to fit inside the Lagoon channel.

It worked very well for 3 seasons of lots of anchoring. Hope this helps.

Hi Boom 23,
Thanks for your quick response-yes your solution sounds very similar to my yards proposal.
Pleased to hear it has worked for 3 years!
Happy Sailing

Hi, same problem. The aluminum is 2", so I have bought some stainless pipe 2.1" ID to cut in half and rivet to the aluminum tube, with anti corrosion past between. Will be done in a couple of days.

Re: Problems with Anchor Roller System on 450

Exactly the same problem. Our was worn almost more than halfway through. Installed a bow roller midway along the anchor chain gutter on the deck, which seems to keep the chain running much straighter and not pulling off the side as it comes in. Secured some high density foam around the half worn U bracket until it can get repaired, and we can install higher cheeks. But as an interim measure the addition of the 2nd bow roller has helped. Also stops chain slamming in the gutter.

Re: Problems with Anchor Roller System on 450

Hi,

We had the same issue... tried to pull anchor in Las Palmas in 20 kt winds and 2m seas... bow got pushed over and our 12mm chain made short work of the aluminium...

We ordered a new one from Lagoon and had some heavier SS cladding applied to the new U frame... and also some drain holes drilled into the bottom of the U frame... the SS is on the sides and the bottom of the U frame...

Re: Problems with Anchor Roller System on 450

Hi Fellow 450 Owners,
Well I started this thread many moons ago and finally I have a fix after many euros and three attempts at a result.
Basically extended the chain channel 100mm to get the chain away from the U bracket and fitted cheeks each end-this worked in most situations however in rough weather the chain jumped off the roller and over the cheek on one side ( not good) so as per second photo cheeks made larger and continuous strap fitted over the top of cheeks to prevent chain from being anywhere but on the roller-oh we also fitted larger custom rollers as well.
The first photo is a mod done in Marmaris Turkey to help locate the chain and prevent damage to the gelcoat-all so drilled a couple of 20mm holes to help drainage on the cat walk-I copied this Idea from SV OOROO 1
I have attached photos as they speak a million words
