42: New 42 vs Helia 44 Evo

To start, I want to thank the contributors for sharing their knowledge and experience, it is a pleasure to read (& re-read) so many and so intructive informations.

You convinced me to go for my first cat !

For cruising in Indian Ocean (south part), and further in the future, would you go for a new Lagoon 42 or FP Helia 44 ?

I am a Lagoon fan, and I have never owned a Helia 44 however having done short test sails on both the Helia 44 and the Lagoon 42S the Helia 44 would get my vote, far more storage space is the main reason, however their is a fair amount of difference between the two not the least being cost, my guess would be the Helia 44 would be around A$200K more, not really a fair comparison.

More storage, it is a major point when long crossings are planed.

Helia is more expensive, but seems that its specs are close to the Lagoon 42.

When you sail the new 42, did the central mast make a big difference in terms of performance and comfort, i mean a real difference that put the others on a lower step ?

I am attracted by the Lagoons, the posts are convincing me more an more...

The FP Helia 44 Evo has sailing performance and also lots of storage and can be purchased for about the same price as the New Lagoon 42.

The New Lagoon 42 uses a lot of open cubby holes where as the FP Helia 44 Evo uses cabinet doors so you do not see all that STUFF in storage.

Thanks for your great info about the storage.
It is clear now, FP 44 Evo is 1st for storage.

I followed your posts regarding your FP Helia 44 Evo, that's why I came to the conclusion that the FP 44 Evo had to be considered in my choice.

Do you know if some Hélia 44 have been delivred with Yanmars instead of Volvo ?

I have never seen or heard of any Helia 44 with Yanmars.

I have had both Yanmars and Volvo Penta's on my previous boats and have seen absolutely no difference in how they run or how they are maintained.

One is silver and one is green.

Helia 44 comes with a VP 55 hp and its actually a 75 hp without the turbo.
Its really an overbuilt engine for a 55hp.

What is your cruising speed ? (on one or two engines ?)
Rpm/consumption ?

Well the the central mast has some good news and some bad, the good news is the self tacker, the bad is the mast compression post in front of the sliding doors to the saloon. Performance wise on the L42S on the day I did see ten knots in around 28 knots of wind, in my L400 around 9.5 would be the number I would expect in the same conditions, the Helia 44 may be a touch quicker. No way in the wide world would I see the competitors a 'lower step'. I was very keen on the L42S as a replacement for my L400 but after a thorough inspection I would not swap the L400 for the 42S in fact I think the L400 is a much better design, just buy the Helia 44 or a nice L400.

There are some good (maybe even better) boats built closer to you Ocean, perhaps look locally?

Our FP Helia 44 Evo has Volvo Penta D2-55 engines with 3 blade folding props.

This setup allows you to motor at 6.5 knots on one engine at 2000 rpms.

Is this correct? I got the base price for the FP44 as approximately Eur80K more than the L42.

Every New Lagoon 42 price we have seen so far show it for a higher price.
$570,000 USD is what we have been seeing.

6.5 knots on one engine, that's good and what i am looking for.
Sometime in the north west, we have very calm weather, needs motoring for hours.
It should give about 7.5/8 knots on two engines.
Good to know that the Volvo is overbuilt, thanks !

RSA builts good boats, but their freeboard has little height for many of them, may be they have less habitability ?
More difficult to find the information about the good or bad for them.

I have also heard that some customers had problems with units from one SA
manufacturer, so for someone without enough knowledge like me, choosing the right one is more problematic (but i am open to any recommendation !).
