Lifeline nets on catamaran, pros / contras ?

Hello guys,

I was wondering if any of you have installed lifeline netting around your catamaran, and what were the main reasons to do so ?

And if installed, do they have an impact on daily buisness like cleats, furling line rollers, fenders etc ?

Do the pros weigh out on the contras ?

Thanks in advance !

We do, used seamar nets, we have 2 cats that run and play on deck. They have paid for themselves on numerous times by catching something that would have blown or fallen over board. Only issue is the spinnaker sheet runs through it but not too hard to work around

We will be installing netting on our Lagoon 450 soon. We have a German Shepherd puppy and 3 kids onboard so we don't want to take any chances. We haven't bought it yet so I look forward to hearing what others recommend.

Very interested this as well. Are these custom made , or can you purchase at West marine type stores.

I got black nylon from these guys....less visually appalling than white and lasts a long time in the sun.

Sailmonkey, thanks for the gourock site. Which type (style and material) did you get and would you order something different now that you have it?

We have three increasingly brave Siamese as crew and are considering netting up.

This is the stuff I got. #21 x 3/4" Nylon Netting I would get it again in a heart beat. I measured the lifelines from top to deck, subtracted an inch, and ordered the length + 10' of what I needed. I hung the top by weaving the lifelines through the finished side of the net, and secured the bottom with small black 3 strand nylon through the bottom, again woven through the net, and tied to each stanchion base. The black faded a bit after 5 years, but not enough to worry about. The black is a lot easier to see though I think, It successfully kept my Schnauzer onboard across the gulf of mexico and through the western Caribbean.

Re: Lifeline nets on catamaran, pros / contras ?

Hi Jugga,
I put netting around our boat when we bought it as we had a small dog. I found it good and bad. The good - our dog never fell overboard with the net in place . 2) The net did stop a lot of things form falling overboard. 3) Unexpected advantage of extra safety when we had the grankids on board.
Bad things or nuisance. 1) We used white netting and it was quite visible - I like the idea of a darker net to blend in. 2) pain in the bum for setting lines and buffers. 3) Can look unsightly 4) Setting it up to tension is very time consuming and frustrating. 5) Can restrict getting thins on and off boat as you now have to pass things over the top of the life lines instead of through them. 6) Surprisinly if you use a really fine net it can increase your windage to the point where you really do notice it coming into a marina to berth till you get used to it. It can restrict your view from the Saloon and cockpit when sitting down.7) Can lull you into a false sense of security. Same safety protocols should remain regardless if net is in place or not. 8) Line/netting need to be checked every 6 months or so for wear and tear and repaired or replaced accordingly.
Olny yesterday we removed our netting as it is no longer needed and its amazing how much cleaner the lines of the boat became. Would be put netting back on our boat if required - unequivical yes.

Just a quick photo of how our netting used to look. One of the difficult parts of installing the netting was to allow access to the cleats. It took a bit of time to get the right shape for the netting and for it to be tight. Not a great picture but only one I could dig out.

I'm away from my photos for several days, but when I get back I'll dig up a photo of the material around our boat.
