Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Looks fantastic Dave. I am jeallious.

I agree, Lagoon should offer it as an option. I don't think 100% would go for it, but a significant percentage of buyers would.

I certainly will think hard about spending the extra money to do it. Would the regular main work with? I do not have the squre top main. Never liked it for cruising, and where we sail we often have one or two reefs in the main.

Keep us up to date on how it works out during the season.

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Hi Rolf,

Unfortunately it needs a new sail that is quite specific in design. Doyles measured it and Leisure Furl issued instructions to them. However it has 7 battens and is 80 sqm. It can be reefed at any point however best with battens on the mandrel. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th battens correspond to the old 1st, 2nd and 3rd reef however I now have a 4th and 5th reef for heaving-to!

If I get some video I will post. Raising can be done with your eyes closed - nothing to snag. Three reefing lines, a mainsail head line and two lazy jack line are replaced with a reefing line and a vang line.

Cheers
Dave

Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Ok, a teething problem with the upper vang being a little weak ;-) but a stronger one being put on and I will try to get some video when out next week. The sail was up at the time but still easy to reef down using the topping lift and mainsheet to get the correct boom angle. Click image for larger version

Do you have any info on how the sail dimensions changed? Can you still get the same shape into it? With a reef as well?

Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

The L450 standard mainsails are 82sqm or 85sqm for the square-top. My Leisure Furl main is 80sqm (Doyles design image attached). With 7 battens it maintains its shape when reefed. The technique to flatten the main for upwind or in stronger winds, when fully up or reefed, is to lock off the halyard and crank on the reefing line a bit. That is supposed to take the draft out of the sail. That cannot be done on the current L450 mainsails.

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Thanks for the photos, Dave. There seems to be a lot of twist. Is that intentional? Can you get it out if you wanted?

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Hi, Actually I was very pleased with the sail shape and twist. All the leech tell tails are flowing nicely. With the original main set up the twist could be adjusted to a certain extent by moving the traveler to leeward and tightening the mainsheet. Now I have the additional control of the vang.

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

I have just got my new L450F last week - with a square top main.

After one day sailing my first thought was to replace it with a Leisure furl. It is not easy to handle, sometimes really dangerous (reefing lines and the end of the boom) and not very convenient.

And I would like to replace it as quick as possible.

Could anyone recommend a place on the Canaries or in the Caribbean (my next destinations) where I can get both: Leisure furl boom and a new main sail?

Thank you very much!

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

The Leisure Furl is a game changer for the L450F and I expect for the L450S as well. One person raises and lowers the sail, easily, safely and in all weather. No reefing lines or lazy jacks to tangle or snag. The sail shape is great, even when reefed, and has good power. I am astounded that more L450 owners do not fit from new. This is a seriously good piece of equipment.

A L440 next to me fitted one with the mast in. We took my one out. Forespar are the agents in the USA and I think there are European agents? Contact me if you do install for tips on operating. Dave
PS. I have no connection with Leisure Furl I just like it

Re: Leisure Furl on Lagoon 450?

Beautiful yacht Dave. Im workin on acquiring one. Looks like you have a decent size tender. Maybe every bit of 12 feet? I would like to buy the biggest one that I could raise. Will have 5 to 7 people on board most the time. Please keep posting those drone shots. They are inspiring.

Cheers

Mike
