Lagoon - Eberspacher heater, changing the coolant fluid?

Eberspacher (and Webasto) say to change the coolant fluid every year or so. It is for the same reason as with the engine internal coolant, if left it starts to corrode the engine.

The Lagoon Eberspacher system has a lot of piping but I have not seen a drain. And unfortunately the pipes split into 3 parallel sets of pipes to the 3 fan heaters, so not a series set of pipes. Has anyone changed the fluid, or got any bright ideas? I expect if done wrong it would become a very big mess!!

Thanks
Dave

Re: Lagoon - Eberspacher heater, changing the coolant fluid?

Hi Dave l just serviced my boat herein Singapore last week and had them change the coolant, they used a small 12v pump to extract the coolant from the system and it seemed to have worked well.

Re: Lagoon - Eberspacher heater, changing the coolant fluid?

The current M series do not have a drain. When we install these, we usually put a drain near the heater so it can be drained without having to disconnect any of the hoses. If you have to disconnect one at the heater, be very careful of the hose barb on the pump. It is plastic, and if you break it, you have to replace the whole pump (and they are expensive).

The drain we have used lately is a spirotrap drain., like this:
TDN075-FT - Spirotherm TDN075-FT - 3/4" Spirotrap Drain Brass Dirt Separators with removable head (Female Thread)
It is designed as a trap for particles, and with a valve on either side you can drain out the sump in it without draining the whole system.

Re: Lagoon - Eberspacher heater, changing the coolant fluid?

Thank you both. The spirotrap looks like a good addition.

Wayne can you please provide a bit more advice? I.e. ;

Where did they disconnect and tap in to remove the fluid? Was the pump sucking or pushing the fluid out?

Did they then use a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze (I seem to recall there are important differences on which type) and how did they get all that back in?

Cheers , Dave.
