Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

You'll need:
2 X Toggle-Toggle 3/4 Rigging Screws at bout A$ 900 for the pair
2 X Toggle Terminal 12.7mm 3/4 at about A$300
2 X Eye Terminal 12.7mm 3/4 at about A$150
35m 12.7 wire at about A$1000
Swaging at say A$100
Labour (rigger and assistant) maybe A$500

So I'm guessing about A$3K but maybe cheaper in NZ

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

As I stated before, this indication was there 14 months ago. I will get an inspection carried out by an Non Destructive Testing Company when back in civilization.

Does anybody know the brand of fittings they use for the rigging.

There are. Look at the size of the slot in the toggle. It may be the same hardware but sizing is different.

This does not imply the very tight slot is the culprit, only gives a clue to one of many possible reasons.

Over-tightening of the swaged fitting on the pin is a bit more likely.

I have force opened one of such kit (toggle on pin) and found the pin was not free to move in the swaged wire fitting (which is OK, as otherwise it might fall out when the rig goes slack) BUT should the machine fit it too tight, this will create stress on the perimeter that might end up in a crack exactly as shown.

Ultimately only a material engineer who understands this design can tell.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

I think forged "T" bolt toggles are a better idea;
The other options (pressed in pin or bolt screwed into the pin) both seem inferior to a solid forged "T".

Cheers,
JM.

Bit difficult currently cruising on Great Barrier Reef. Far North Queensland.

I pointed this out to a Rigger 14 months ago (boat was only 12 months old then) when I was having a Halyard and Aerial installed in Mast. His answer was "only a surface crack, from manufacturing" so I did not worry about it any more, till I had seen your post this morning Dave so now I am wondering if I should be worried or not.
Will follow with interest what happens from here.
Hi Paul
If you are anywhere near Port Douglas, and you want to set you mind at ease regarding your rig, I can recommend an excellent rigger in Port Douglas his name is Peter Greg.

"sparcraft"

Thanks Atoll, do you know this for a fact?

I have been all over the standing rigging hardware and can find no manufactures name or numbers on any thing.

The Boom has a Z-Spar sticker on it with serial and model number near the mast.

The Port Lower diamond wire has a stainless steel washer with a long number stamped into it. That is the only indications as to origin I can find so far. It's 2013 boat.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

Z spa spacraft eurospa are all one in the same company,

if I had discovered suspected cracks the first thing I would do would be get a Dremel and a carbied bit and just lightly grind them to see how deep they are . If they are more than .015 deep and they continue to grow in length yes replace . But I have had the same situation on my beneteau 45f back in mid 90's and Found out the cracks where tool marks made after the casting the steel when they carried out machining them from the holding fixtures

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

Looks like a mark from the original tooling to me. Unlikely 2 fitting on different boat would have a crack in exact same spot. You can easily replace the top terminal with a sta lock long marine eye and double jaw toggle if needed.

You know this for a fact.

Eurospa appear to be re-sellers of Sparcraft and other manufacturers.

Sparcraft appear to be manufacturers in opposition to Z-Spar.

That is only what I can find out from the Interweb on a Sunday afternoon
moored off of Dunk Island FNQ.

Will start making phone calls tomorrow.

Re: Lagoon Cap Shroud Cracks!

I have asked my local agent who to contact with regard to the mast, etc.

However Z-Spar (Z-Diffusion) appear to be the culprits and easy enough to track down:

Z Spars International - Conception des produits

I am not sure I can be bothered as I expect I will get the usual brush off.
