500: Lagoon 500 Nearly Sunk

I wonder what Lagoon's reaction will be on the incident in Thailand that almost sunk a Lagoon 500.

What happened to the Lagoon 500? Whale? Container? Leaking saildrive?

From what I understand the dingy painter got tangled in the saildrive, the saildrive dislocated and water flooded the engine room. This water then made it's way through the bulkhead via some factory installed pipes and flooded the left hull. To safe the boat it was beached but it ended up flooding both hulls.

Heh. Maybe a 1/4" Dacron dinghy painter would be a good idea rather than 1/2 inch Vectran.

Don't tow dinghy's. It's simply not proper. If you are just resetting the anchor, or whatever, tie the dinghy alongside where it cannot cavort with the prop.

I think the question should be why a defective construction almost led to the loss of the boat. That does not reflect well on Lagoon.In fact the interior of the boat is lost after having been in the water.

Well let's be clear. Thread title says "sunk," first post says "almost sunk," later post says "both hulls flooded." You'd need a lot more information to conclude whether or not this boat was actually in any danger of sinking per se.

The boat is less than a year old so they should be covered by the factory garantee, they will however lose a lot of cruising time.

You think wrapping up the prop and dislocating the drive is a warranty item?

The boat didn't sink and a surveyor concluded that, although the boat had CE certification requiring waterproof bulkheads, Lagoon had cut holes through to run plumbing etc., allowing water to enter the interior. The real issue is that NO ONE should use a dinghy painter that doesn't float. Full stop. The surveyor noted that they had used a sheet - and that it was strong enough to tear out a mooring cleat once caught in the prop. A good argument for for line-cutters on the props, but an even better argument for keeping the dinghy up on the davits when underway and using a proper painter that floats.

No, but issuing a CE certificate while the boat does not comply is.
