Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Hi Guys, i keep hearing that the Lagoon 450 is relatively slow in comparison to the Salina 48 and Leopard 46, i am seriously looking at a 450 at the moment. Could anyone tell me how they actually perform under sail? What number of nautical miles per 24 hours would you plan on for passage making? Do they sail well in lighter winds?

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Hi,
Have just ordered a 450S and I am confident that it is a great compromice between speed, price and comfort.

Darksyde: Is it the original Code 0? I cannot justify the steep price so I'm looking for a aftermarket/seconhand sail.
Can you please telle me the measures of your Code 0 if you have them by hand?

Well you can check out the race performance of the L450 vs Leopard 46, Salina, Lagoon 500, Helia 44, Catana 471 etc at the Heineken regatta results for 2013 2014 2015, under Multihulls 3, click at top of each race and you will get the elapsed time (e), quite often only a few minutes between all of them in a 2 - 3 hour race. Probably more about the quality of the crew than the boat, but it makes for entertaining comparisons.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

I have a feeling that a L450 with good sails (incidence hydranet instead of stock), a small and light generator (instead of the heavy onan 13kW), G70 chain, and an experienced crew will be faster than an old Leopard46, maybe even the Salina48 loaded with goodies with a couple with little experience and conservative during night watch
;-)

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Check out my video of a test sail on a 450S on San Francisco Bay, my youtube channel is "iliohale Productions".

Here is the link to the video:

Not the fastest catamaran around but very comfortable and performs well enough. My suggestion is good sails, good sail inventory, and well set up running rigging will make a big difference.

I work on 7 kts average. If less than 5 kts I start an engine. In the video at 9.50min you can see the ride in 32kts across and 4m+ swells. Treble reefed, 9kts.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

On a L450 F we have covered 27 000 nm, fully loaded to max weight with toys and equip. I don't think you can find a comparable size boat with the weight carrying capacity and still have a respectable average speed. Our delivery of 10 500 nm averaged 6.8 knot. The balance of our trip which is a bit more cruisy averages approx 6.5 kn. We passage plan on 6 knots and always beat it. In the 2.5 years and 27 000 nm we have only run up 960 hours on the yanmars so its not that we motor alot. We do not usually motor on passage. I believe a light leopard 46 is faster, but the take about 2 tons less load We still believe we made the right choice. We have a 99 m sq code zero and a 160 m sq symmetrical for the off wind and it goes well. I don't think its possible to beat the speed, load and comfort at the price range. Our travels have inclde France, Rio, Cape Town, Caribbean, South Pacific and currently in NZ. Incident free. Good luck

o yes, we have folding props. BTW, all up weight is 22 tons. For a car analogy, Its like a Toyota Camper. If you want Ferrari, you need to double the budget.

i think your estimate too optimistic. To get 'Ferrari' that manages extra 1 kn average speed over life of boat, say 7k vs 6kn lagoon, and take same load weight and volume, and same level of trimming skills and alertness, you need at least 3x.

Every 1/10 of a knot added average speed is very expensive exercise.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Results from the 30 races/rallies I have, show the Lagoon 450 and the Leopard 46 to have the same speed, and the Salina to be about 4% faster.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

We’ve pulled off a few 220nm days and many >180nm days on passages. And like Indigo, ours weighs in at 21-22 tonnes.

450s are doing extremely well in the ARC at the moment.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Gotta be feeling good when all boats in front of you are 50ft plus (bar the TS 42 greyhound) and you are outpacing an Outremer 45, a Catana 47 only 58 miles behind an Outremer 5 X and two of you are in the top 10 out of 28 after 9 days.
