Presume is sailed very well, bit of advertisement, and L 400 probably not that tense.

In this scenario roughly 1/3 faster. Same crew, guestimate would be 1/4 faster.

Wonder how much it costs...

Hey guys, get real here. Likely many of these boats are motoring given the wind conditions. Until the race is finished and we understand how many hours were spent sailing vs. powering, you can't make any conclusions as to performance.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

I own a 2018 L450S and am really happy so far with the performance (and thrilled with the layout). The boat averaged 150nm days (one 200nm day) crossing the Atlantic with only a jib and mainsail. A well designed heavier boat is an advantage because of the greater ability to carry a load and also greater comfort because the boat is less buffeted by wind and waves.

Of course you can: a TS42, O64, 18m Swan and even mono Pogo 40, all managed by experienced crews, are faster than family managed L450, doing its first ocean passage.

Then, for most 45-50ft cat, equally equipped (sails especially) and managed, let's say from L450 to even the ITA 50ft, the weather conditions and routing choices will have a major effect on who will be across first. So some will get there few days earlier, maybe a week.
Not all depends on the boat, and is this really a big deal ?

Also the fastest cat is the one you can get to cross the Atlantic the soonest: ARC 2017 cats are all faster boats than ARC 2018 !

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

Keep in mind that the ARC is not a race it's simply a ralley so boat speeds and daily averages can be taken with a grain of salt. We cruised for awhile with a L45 and found it averaged similar speeds to a 42 foot mono cruising boat but man was it huge. Had a party one night on it with 25 people and there was tons of space for everyone...I can see the attraction.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

I like the results of the ARC 2014 rally, if you look at the actual finish times the L450 did pretty well, no wonder he cleaned up on handicap.

The ARC isn't exactly a reflection of everyday sailing reality. In 2015 a FP Salina 48 won the multihull division by flying a 2600 (!!!) sqft Parasail spinnaker. They were able to knock down 240+ mile days running this monster sail, and clocked a top speed of 26kt surfing down a wave. The owner admitted they were in danger of losing the rig pretty much every day. Before I decided whether an ARC finish position meant anything I'd want to know what sails they ran.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

The ARC+ is finishing up, and there are several L450's in it. Not first, but not last.

Yes, I guess if this were a real race then the handicaps would have been adjusted for overkill sails like that, which it seems they did not. I am surprised the rally organizers condoned such a modification on the basis of safety.

I wonder if the 450F will beat the 450S

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

ARC

as it should be larger lagoons faster than smaller.

62 followed by 52 followed by bunch of 45 and then couple 42 mixed with 400.

Interesting lagoons doing well against 'faster & leaner' brands like nautitech, seawind etc.

maybe lagoons are using motors, but cant motor whole way so must do some sailing as well.

time will tell.

Re: Lagoon 450 sailing performance?

There was a lot of light wind and motoring on day 2-4. If you want to get an idea of a day's sailing run, adjust the tracker time slider until the boat is 2/3 of the way to St Lucia, note the lat/lon then slide the tracker backwards/forwards 24 hours and check the difference. Unfortunately it seems to only show the current DTF.

The "faster and leaner" are probably overloaded.

For example, the "big" Seawind 1250 has a CE Category A (open ocean) maximum load rating of 1450kg. With such a low payload, I can't see too many being equiped, crewed and provisioned for an ocean crossing and being under this limit.
