sail4evr,

It was almost exactly what Lagoon charges for the ICW rig option - about $7,000.

Dockhead: your generous later responses are leading me to revise a statement I've made in the past: "Catophobia can not be cured with facts", but so far you are the exception that proves the rule!

Try sailing a cat again, you may find it LESS exciting than driving a good monohull thru the same conditions. In my club there are crews that think my boat is boring, even though we get there first. They prefer to feel like they've earned the miles they've covered.

Thanks, I will, if someone invites me! One big mistake I made was certainly being the skipper and helmsman myself first time out on a cat. Next time I'll be crew only, grind winches, and observe someone with experience.

As to being less exciting than driving a mono -- I will agree with you that less exciting is better. If you respect the awesome power and majesty of the ocean as you should, you never want anything at sea to be any more exciting than it has to be.

Cheers and Fair Winds, DH

Sandy,

That reminds me of a story. I took a mono racer sailing on Biscayne Bay. We were close on the wind doing over 9 knots. Sitting in the cockpit with Heinekins sitting upright by themselves, and the boat steering on auto. He looks around, and says to me "You're not earning it!". Meaning to say it was toooooo eeeeaaaassssyyyyy, but he was no longer a naysayer to multis......lololololol.......i2f

Dockhead, I'm with Sandy on his post concerning your later comments - you were obviously prepared to read some statistics, ponder some other opinions and then to reconsider your own. An open mind is a rarity precisely because it is difficult for any of us to set aside our own biases, prejudices and experience. And as to the last sentence in your most recent post - it was well written and beyond dispute to any of us who have logged more than a few miles under our keels (or boards).

Cheers and fair winds indeed!

Welll! Let's not get to carried away. There is something special about feeling a monohull settle into a groove as she beats to windward in 15 kn of breeze. Feeling the boat accelerate as she picks up the breeze. Heeling never bothered me that much. I don't get much of that on my cat. I do miss it sometimes. Granted I will go faster on my cat, but I wouldn't call it particularly responsive. Kind of like driving a car vs bus. Don't get me wrong, it's just I am driving my house around. It's not a greyhound. But you can't live in my opinion comfortably on a greyhound. If I was just daysailing, wed night races, sailing across to Louie's for drinks and dinner, my mono was just fine. But I got this bug to live the rest of my life on a cat in the islands. Se la vie!

sail4ever, I don't think the discussion centered around whether sailing is more fun on a cat than a mono - we were talking about safety. For whatever its worth, however, I tend to agree with you: I still prefer the feel of a well-balance monohull sailing to windward over the feel of a cat on the same point of sail.
