Re: Lagoon 420 Owners & Fans

Thanks so much.

Things are pretty hectic right now trying to carry enough supplies to fix boat. Heading down to BVI in Nov.

Of the 23 cats(left after Irma) in our yard, 2 where Lagoon 420's. 6 of 23 kept their mast, stayed upright, and look to have their keels and rudders. BOTH 420's are in that group of 6, thanks to some luck, heavy rigs and hulls.

The boat leaning on the boat behind ours in the attached picture is a FP 44 footer.

A lot of sad owners and residents down there....

Sad to see so many boats damaged - I thought in a cyclone/typhoon prone area, hardstands would have hard points to tie down too, like light aircraft parking. It may have prevented a few boats from rolling over...

On a lighter note the cat on left of your photo looks to be named correctly "Flip Flop".

Good luck with your repairs, so you can get back out quickly to your excellent sailing in the BVI.

Oh man, it looks so sad with this flipped cats on the dry.
Unbelievable that a storm can flip a heavy boat of 12+ tons that easy.

Anyone pulled the water tanks out of a Lagoon 420 stbd. hull? What is the trick?

We just sold our 420 and experiencing sellers remorse. Are you seeing many cats for sale in the area, or are they being auctioned? Not looking for anything that has been underwater, but interested in seeing what is out there.

I suspect one reason your rig survived may be double shrouds on L420, as I can see in the picture you posted. Did other L420 have double shrouds as well?

BVI update

Other 420 survivor was a single spreader mast version. It went straight into the water without any repairs. We spent 10 frustrating weeks getting hull repaired from a unprepared charter boat allowed in the yard. Sails on and dingy on the davits. Broke it’s keels and then wind driven into us.

Many damaged cats in the yard were sold for $1 plus yard fees that ranged up to $5k. Keels and rudders gone plus significant hull damage and of course no mast.

Re: Lagoon 420 Owners & Fans

Our Lagoon 420 Bonanza is back in the water and we have started sailing! Still need a damaged spreader replaced but riggers approved sailing till part arrives.

I have a copy of the owners manual down loaded. It is dated 2007. Reviewing the sail plans it states Page 9/30 “the genoa should never be flown full with 2 reefs in the main”

This really puts a crimp in downwind sailing. I have a 2009 model with a double spreader.

Did the 2009 come with a different sail plan?

Congratulations on getting "Bonanza" back in the water.

Our L400 manual also states"100% genoa with 2 reef in the mainsail is prohibited absolutely ".

We have sailed with no main and 100% genoa many times. We reduce by furling when wind looks like exceeding 23 knots.
