Lagoon 400/420/421 sailing comparison

Hello everyone,
we are currently in the throes of upgrading our Lagoon 410 to a newer model. We are looking at the 400, 420 and 421. Layouts appear very similar but I have found little if any information on actual cruising sailing performance. I have been more then impressed with the sailing capability of our current 410 and really don't want anything less than this. Even in full cruising mode we do 8 to 9 knots on a beam reach in 15 knots of breeze and I will have similar expectations on any new boat we purchase. With our Wingaker we have recorded doing 4 knots in 8 knots of wind downwind in flat seas.
I would be most grateful for any information regarding true cruising performance sailing characteristics as opposed to published polars.

Re: Lagoon 400/420/421 sailing comparison

one man experience:

Done close to 3k NM on L 400, so moderate experience. Also chartered L 41 many years ago when beginner, so cant compare performance fairly first hand.

Have compared performance L400 against polar of 41 and in small winds can match or surpass. That becomes harder above 12kn wind. Maybe my trimming skills or is actually slower. Gennaker is substantial help in anything up to 35 app, if seas nice enough (no flapping). 9 kn with gennaker in 15 kn true at 65 app doable. White sails only, can do 7.5 kn or so. I think gennaker is essential for sailing light winds as boat is heavier and has less sails than L 41.

L400 goes fine to windward even in 40 kn app because it is very stiff boat. Upwind track over ground mostly around 100 deg. Average difference between boat and COG is 5-10 degrees. Aerodynamical shape is same as L 450S, so behaviour should be similar.

Loss of performance after boat gets loaded with toys is minimal.

Sell Sunshine? I thought you two would only leave that boat in a pair of wooden boxes!

From what I've seen and read the L410, would slightly outperform the L400, and more than slightly outrun the L420 and L421 with similar load, sails and skill. I'd put money on it out performing a new L42 as well.

The advantage of the L420/421 over a L410 is quite a bit more space, payload and separate engine compartments. As you know, these may be viewed as a mixed blessing. Not sure that I'd swap a nicely refitted L410 ( eg. Sunshine) for a more expensive and unknown L400, that offers similar space and performance.

That's the trouble with upgrading Lagoons, the newer models seldom outperform the older ones. The exception being that a new L42 may sail faster than a L420, the later being an unusually heavy vessel in the designed hybrid power version.

You don't really wish to part with thay lovely L410 after all your TLC, do you?

Any experiences / comments on a parasailor on a Lagoon 400S2?

What do you need to modify to be able to fly one downwinds?

Re: Lagoon 400/420/421 sailing comparison

I posted a sa/ d table. Best sailing boats are 380, 400, and 450. New 42 sails well after 12 to 15, else you need a gennaker. If you can handle the size, a 450 sails great. My boat is right besides one, it makes my boat look tiny.

New 40 has a bit worse ratio than 42, and assume will need a gennaker. But both have self tacking jibs which I would find very useful.
