So far 80 units have been identified as having problems. That could be substantial, but is that the serial numbers of boats produced? or engines? what is the total population?

Volvo is methodical and meticulous in diagnosing a problem. They will find it.
My armchair diagnosis. The fuel system is creating too much vacuum up stream from the engine. This causes air to be sucked in through various fittings and connection points.

Maybe its even simpler. If the fuel pick-up is too high in the tank or the shape of the tank isn't properly designed you simply suck in air when the tank goes below a certain level (50% in this case). The remedy is simple; a redesign (baffles) or modification of the tank to ensure fuel can be sucked up even if the tank is getting to let's say 10% of its capacity. The pain is probably in the fact that this would mean replacing tanks (80 times....).
