380: Lagoon 380 - 13kW (18hp) ?

We are just on deciding to buy a used Lagoon 380 equipped with 2x13kw (18hp) Yanmars, but we are not sure if that is enough for such a boat. We are a family and want to go on a extensive cruising. Can anyone help us out?

I would not see this as a problem. The smaller yanmars will give you a greater range at a lower max speed.

So if you want maximum range under engine they are better than the larger ones. Run one engine at 2.000 rpm and you have a very good mileage.

The max speed loss compared to the larger 27hp ones will be less than 1 knot.

The small engine might create a problem if you have to go upwind in with force 6 or over or try to go into a harbor with a lot of wind, the windage of the 380 is huge and 2 x 13 hp is probably not enough to overcome that problem , in any other condition they will be fine.

I would have to agree with fastcat, based on how our 43' cat performs with 40hp yanmars. The 380 is still pretty big, I would be concerned in high winds and currents with with that few pony's Meck

Exact, that is my concern; although the cat has 18 hp (13 kW) I find it just on the border of maneuverable. I had chartered a 380 Lagoon with 27 hp and had some problems to get it up-wind, to get it back to the base.

I have a 380 with 27hp Volvos. Would not want any less for our cruising area. We have many tidal passes and would not want to try those with only 18 hp.

You will not be far off hull speed with both engines running in still air. You'll get good range on one engine for steady cruising in calms.
You'll just have to motor sail into the right place and learn to drop sails, or roller reef the genoa and run in with the main until you can turn upwind to drop the main. How much you reef before the run in will be part of that.
Certainly my 34ft on 25 to 30 hp struggles to make good against wind and tide under motor as I found out when the roller wouldn't reef and I had to turn down wind to drop the sail and stow it. By that time I was a mile or so down wind and tide against a choppy swell. One of two times I wished I'd had a mono with a good engine. The other is manoeuvring but then you have two props, makes it SO easy.
