Fitted original 25kg Delta with 15 meters of 13mm chain and 100 meters of rope rode and put away as spare in locker 3 years ago, I assume it is still there but have not looked at it for 3 years. Full time live aboard cruising East Coast Oz.
Thanks. And just curious, what do you use for a stern anchor when necessary?

I guess if I ever have to deploy a stern anchor it will have to be my spare, not something I have ever had to do, so far anyway.

Have a couple of big ass Electric Genoa winches which will probably help in the recovery if I ever have to use.

Stern anchor, (also spare) Aluminum Fortress, really good anchor as it's holding power to weight ratio is handy, can be man handled in the dinghy and if the boat is not swinging it will not have to re set, which may be a problem for this type in some circumstances. It can also be taken apart for storage.

Ditch the swivell. It is useless and add a weakening point.
if your bo roller is well design, the chain will unwrap itself.

Designed by evil ship's chandler to add weakness, complexity and unnecessary cost to ground tackle.

Re: L450 - anyone using a 40kg Rocna?

After much internet research and scouring the forums we purchased an 85lb (40kg) Mantus to replace the stock 25kg Delta that came with our 2011 L450.

Could not be happier. Already been tested in some strong blows and we didn't budge.

I also have a Mantus and like it, but it is one of the very few that can truthfully claim to be stronger than high test chain, and is designed so that a side load will not damage it.
I would say most swivels are junk, but there are a few that are not.

Yes, in straight pull. Do they publish side-load strength? If installed directly on your anchor (instead of on bow shackle which is then attached to anchor) and anchor gets stuck and you (or wind) put side load on a swivel, many will break as documented, besides others, by Practical Sailor. So, unless you anchor for long period of time in places where boat will move in circles, do not use it. It is a hazard to your boat.

I had a 40kg Rocna on my last L450 and will have it on my new one, too. Great anchor, no problems at all.

Re: L450 - anyone using a 40kg Rocna?

Hi All.
I have been reading the posts with great interest as I am considering buying a L450S .
I think I would go for the Rocna 40 as some have said that it fits OK .
I have had many years experience anchoring with our last boat , a mono hull HR53 , 30 tons displacement , loaded.
She had the 88lb Delta . Great anchor , held us in a few bad storms and also dragged a few times . I had 300 ft of 13mm SS chain , in 318LN . Yes 318 .
It is the only SS chain recommended for salt water use in hot tropical climates .
Do not use 316 , period , better to stay with high test galvanised. I will stay with the standard 1/2” galvanised chain.
I wrote an article on SS chain for Yacthing Monthly a few years ago , I think it was May 2006 .
My main reason for writing is swivels , DO NOT USE ANYWHERE ON A BOAT .
Only OK to use for attaching your keys to your belt .
SS is notorious for stress cracks , mix this with hot salt water , mud or sand , low oxygen and bingo it will shear it head off .
A Lewmar swivel sheared holding our big Genoa on , in Mid Atlantic , in 28 knts of wind , no fun.
A friends 55 mono hull anchor swivel sheared of in Gibraltar.
Regardless of who makes them , or what a marine store tells you , never , never use a swivel on a anchor .
The Two lots of 316 SS anchor chain we went through , nearly every link had crevice corrosion , and holes 1/4’’ deep . These chains were made in Germany by KW. They replaced it all with the 318 , along with the advice .

Re: L450 - anyone using a 40kg Rocna?

Thanks for the Photo , exactly what I wanted to see . Just keep a careful eye on your SS anchor , especially the welds for any surface pitting , if it starts , send it back then buy a galvanised one .
Anchoring in the Caribbean is really bad for 316 SS . I have added a photo one link of my old 316 chain , showing a large hole .
