Stupid Question
I keep seeing Cats with inside throttle & joystick controls
Does anyone really use them or was that a fad ?

Don't know for throttle but autopilot joystick is very useful in the saloon. On crossing night watches are mainly from the saloon.

Re: For Sale
I have wondered about the usefulness of inside joysticks also. Even night watches inside - just how often are you changing the autopilot direction? For us, it is either never, or we are outside at the helm doing something that requires temporary course changes that would not be practical from inside (reefing, etc). I can't remember any passage where it would be convenient or necessary to drive the AP from inside the boat.
I would think these would be more useful on the bow, or the bimini - where they could be used to steer the boat when navigating reefs, etc.

Re: For Sale
On L560 you have to climb up to change direction. How often? Well, in Med quite often with fishing boats, nets, traffic ... This is useful 4 larger cats.

I like have the throttles inside for being able to alter power in the event I an emergency... In terms of the AP joystick... Those are completely obsolete now with the raymarine wireless remotes... I think that's the main reason you don't see them on new boats quite as much

Re: For Sale
I totally agree that the inside helm isn't really usable with limited visibility etc, maybe a cold weather option but i think fogging of windows would restrict.
Being a warm weather sailor i helm from up-top or sitting at bow seats with Smartcontrol in hand and spinnaker flying.
This was my solution i moved the helm aft and use it almost everyday backing into quaysides...
Cheers Frank

Re: For Sale
We have a bow-thruster (swing-thruster) and there was an unused joystick with the boats spares and the Aussie agent gave me a redundant pad control.
I mounted them there as well as an anchor windlass control so to back up quayside here in Europe i or my wife can do it all from the pedestal standing facing the quay.
On a 440 you have very limited vision aft so it made sense to move the controls in such a way.
Cheers Frank

Or maybe that every ~30 minutes or so you should be sticking your head up into the actual conditions to see what's going on.

Other than feeling the wind in one's face, on many catamarans, one does have their head up into the actual conditions and can see what's going on just by sitting on the settee. We don't have to pop out of holes like groundhogs.
It is no different than sitting under a dodger in a mono, other than it is infinitely more comfortable and pleasant and the visibility is better.

The kids love to slam the inside saloon throttles fore and aft at the boat shows, so they must be pretty good to take that abuse. The boats sales pitch to keep the kids busy on a passage.
I use auto pilot inside the saloon a lot for sitting at the nav station an dodging a lobster pot or two, but that is about it.
