Dismantle starboard engine fan / blower

Hi there,

Does somebody has to repair or replace the electric fan under the walkway behind the sikaflexed air intake tubes next to the wall where the liferaft is mounted on the other side? I guess it is intended to suck out some fumes and hot air from the engine compartment when turning on the power to the engine.

How do you got this thing out? The maintenance opening next to the life raft is only for accessing the screws of the deck hardware. And a regular body does not fit inside the tunnel of thesteering rod and the hoses. What a stupid place to put an electric device in, it could stay comfortably and serviceable in the engine room with only the ducts going to the tunnel.

Yes....that is a fun one! Can't fit through the life raft opening either.
You have to take apart the wood frame around the engine covers. Then crawl for it. Ha!

I guess, I'll need a 6 months diet before i can get there.

Will replace them with inline blowers located inside the tubes before they enter the engine compartment. They cost a fraction, are lightweight and easy to replace.

Do you know if the blow fresh air in or suck the air out of the engine room?

Re: Dismantle starboard engine fan / blower

On my L420 the fans pulled the air out of the engine compartment. I know have a L450 and the fans have never worked. Replacing them is on my "list". Not looking forward to doing the job, as I want the old fans out.

General rule. Always suck air out of engine rooms, even while supplying air to the engine. You want the engine room to be a tiny bit negative atmospheric pressure relative to the rest of the boat, or you will be pushing poisonous and explosive gases into your living space.

Re: Dismantle starboard engine fan / blower

Makes sense, thank you very much for the hint.

Maybe I just leave the defect blower where they are and add the inline blower to the hose, will check, if they block too much air fow, but doubt it, usually they are only a drum with paddles and air goes straight thrue when they are off.

The fans suck the gases out of the compartment.
Fresh air gets in as the fans create small under-pressure in the compartment.
