Re: Backflow into Head

Practical Sailor did not like the Raritan valve saying that "it didn’t resist stale urine as well as other valves. It became stiff, lost resilience, and leaked (in the lab and on the test boat)." That was about all they said about any of the three valves leaking back.

Leaking back is a problem that I would like to solve as well.

I have wondered if a higher column of standing water might be better than a lower column of water by putting enough pressure on the joker valve to push it tightly together and sealing it off.

Groco recommended that I not over tighten the bolts that hold the joker valve containing flange together. The thinking being that squeezing too hard on the edge of the valve distorts the duckbill part and keeps the lips from closing properly.

Re: Backflow into Head

I've had a different issue with my electric toilet. I get dirty water coming in on the clean side. Apparently the shaft runs both clean and dirty sides, and allows some backflow. I have to flush a lot to get it cleans for this reason. Just bought a Lavac to replace the electric!

But if you want an electric ill sell you mine.

Re: Backflow into Head

Usually there are 2 joker valves fitted do you have one seperate to the toilet on the outgoing pipe to the holding tank?

There is a seal between the two circuits that prevents dirty water entering the clean flush water. Not expensive to replace but like all toilet tasks not particularly pleasant. Been there done that !!

That can happen on the Jabsco when, as Uncle Bob pointed out, the seal fails. It's not a normal situation and it's pretty easy to fix.

It won't happen on the Raritan Sea Era as the two pumps are on opposite ends of the motor.
