A first class review Monte...... Particularly useful information on range when on one engine. Might look closely at your mod with the bilge. Handover of new boat 12th June, 6 week s to fit out and then depart UK for Med.

Although our's is a Mk 1 version (ie. non S2) lagoon 400, most of your pros and cons are applicable to earlier L400s. As such I agree with the review.

The navigation light issue surprised me. Our standard port and starboard lights mounted on the seagull striker over the crossbeam are not compliant. They have an arc of less than 180 degrees visibility rather than the required 225 degrees. When viewed from abaft of beam the lights are not visible. I'll be installing masthead nav lights soon!

I was also a bit disappointed in the lack of gel coat in the bilges and the unsealed ply edges but it's a production boat after all.

Good review thanks, never sailed on a cruising cat so that part describing its behaviour under sail was informative as was the rest. Will look forward to any updates. Was surprised at how little fuel you use at 5 knts. We use about 1 litre per hour with a Yanmar YSM 8 at 5 knts but in a 26ft monohull. Guess a modern ECU injection system is much more efficient not to mention the Cat part

Great review Monte, You are a tall guy if I recall, How is the headroom on the 400 as compared to a 450? I am 6' 4" (1.93 m) and found the 450 we chartered to be very comfortable with room to stand up throughout the boat.
I loved the island berths in the aft cabins on the 450, the original 400 had island berths but the S2 dosen't have them, I have some back and neck issues and often start and end the day in no mood to crawl in or out of bed from the foot, how does that work for you? Thanks and good luck. Greg

Cheers. Yes the bilges are flow coated but not the main hull interior. The bilges differ from the L380 in that they are mostly enclosed with a shoebox sized bilge area where the bilge pump is located. This makes cleaning a bit easier. On the 380 we needed to use a sponge on a string and push it down with a broomstick.
I'm 6', 180cm and the only places I can possibly bump my head are the bulkhead doorways. I'd guess there's pretty much 2m clearance throughout. The other headbanger is the corner of the galley overhead if you try work on the galley bench from the side near the door. Leaning foreword you can headbut the corner easily. After a few bumps you soon figure out what not to do..
Lagoon changed the rear berths with the S2 version to half island, meaning one side has access from half of the side of the berth, instead of both sides. For anyone with back issues this may work better than accessing from the end. We usually use the space for blankets or Jens keyboard on passage.

I have to apologise for the incorrect fuel data, going from vague memory. The actual l /hr at idle revs is closer to 1.5, and at 2000 rpm closer to 3l/hr. This brings the cruising range down to 750M at those rpm.

We did keep fairly good track of fuel usage but when running in the engines high revs are called for occasionally so it's difficult to gauge exactly. The chart by yanmar seems accurate, I'll confirm rpm required for different speeds next sail.

I concur about the head bang on the upper cabinet, my other head bang spot is entering the bathroom on the owners side. ( yes it's a bathroom not a head) I am not as tall as you and when I have my reading glasses on I smack my head on the upper door jam.

Further to my comment on boat envy, most every time I purchase a large item it does not take long to see the next best greatest thing and wish I had waited.
This purchase of my 400s2 has none of that. I am not sure if it is because I spent an inordinate amount of time doing research or pure luck.
No boat is perfect and the 400s2 would not be perfect for everyone but that said the 400s2 is a very well thought out middle of the road boat.
It's as close to perfect ( for me) as I could have ever wished for, 1 year in and still pinch myself that I'm living the Dream.

We just took ownership of a 2015 400 S2 and Iam quite pleased with the shift from Raymarine to B&G electronics. The Zeus 12" is really good.
We sailed a 2014 S2 for a week before deciding on purchase and the whole family, all 6 of us, are delighted.

1) Do I read correctly you have no generator at all? Does the Solar suffice generally for your power needs?

2) How much battery power do you have; just the factory install? AGM?

3) Do you intend to put in any heating or A/C?

3jh5e with sd 50, fuel consumption is less than in your chart. at 3000 is 8.5L and not 11L.

Presume you attached wrong chart ?

I ordered a Jeanneau 50DS just over a year ago, i chose the raymarine ev400 autopilot option that was advertised as a change for 2014. The invoice from Jeanneau specified a spx30 autopilot. I questioned this with Jeanneau and was informed they didn't install ev400 autopilot. I then sent them the flyer the dealer forwarded from Jeanneau detailing the 2014 electronics changes, and they said yes we will install the ev400, they did and it's great. It's just a pity you didn't realise the changes before delivery, and the Beneteau group should not use the small print cop out in the way it did with you.

Very informative review but not sure if I am ready to turn to the dark side.

Luckily I managed to have SD60 saildrive fitted, but expected SD50 saildrive!
