Sydney Sailing

Moving to Sydney in a coupe of weeks and hoping to find some weekend sailing. I have my YM and just want some more experience on different types of boat etc.

Saltdog - I lived in Kirribilli until recently and loved the view of all the yachts crossing back and forth in the harbour and under the bridge. If the weather was marginal for sailing there would be regattas across the bay, dodging ferry and big ship traffic - certainly nothing for the faint at heart! Depending upon where in Sysdney you live, you might head south or a short drive north and you will get to Mona Vale which has a lot of yachts and marinas as well and might be more enjoyable than the harbour. I might be returning there as well sometime in the next months, just in time to miss autumn in the northern hemisphere and see an Australian spring.

Just to give you an idea - here's a picture taken from my balcony one weekend, the trees at the bottom belong to a well-known Australian residence called "Kirribilli House"

Saltdog....Welcome! We are not far North of you and go out for fun and adventure more than most other things... Our yacht is a liveaboard too, which means we never push her too hard.
Keep in touch, as the weather warms up we will be going out for day trips more often.

Zanshin.... beautiful place! I must admit, it is a nice view.... (Shame about the neighbours!! lol)

But wait, there's more.

My boat is on Brisbane Water and I live at Umina Beach too. I've sent you two locals a PM.

Hi Zanshin,

The harbour certainly looks like you need to know your col regs!

Saltdog - that was just a normal day. When you have 3-4 Regatta races along with the green ferries and perhaps a big car transport being tugged to the bridge it gets really interesting!

You guys need to hook up with Boracay. He just posted a thread about needing some extra hands. Didn't mean to hijack this thread but it just seemed to perfect that you are all needing each other's company.

Colregs won't help you much on Saturdays in Sydney Harbour. Too many racing yachts! Only way to get through is to close your eyes, cover your ears, and barge right through 'em!

Just kidding . . . don't do it. You may get hit by an empty beer bottle! The lightweight European bottles will leave you with a bump, but a Tooheys . . . uh, uh.
