Re: School Teacher Deckhand Over Summer Break

Spain is around 4,000 miles farther than I expected to travel, but I would be crazy not to consider sailing around the Mediterranean this summer.

I teach 3rd grade (8 and 9 year olds) at a public school in Athens, Georgia. Despite the landlocked locale, I manage to make it to the coast a few times a year to surf, visit family, and explore. One of the reasons for wanting to learn how to sail is a (pipe) dream I had once of opening a traveling elementary school or camp aboard a sailing vessel.

The majority of responses so far have advised me to attend courses at various sailing schools, and (prior to your inquiry) the next step was to simply post fliers around marinas in the hope of finding a kind soul who could use a hand in exchange for sharing some knowledge of sailing. Given my role as an educator, I could also offer tutoring services.

In addition to teaching, I also write for Literacyhead, a website for teachers that connects literacy and the arts. Other interests include surfing, skateboarding, biking, photography, and vegan cooking. Obviously I have a number of questions, so if you're still interested, please email me the details of your trip, and a little about your family.
