Ready to go south NOW!

Hello,

I am getting mighty cold here in North Carolina and am thinking about a sailing trip to the south, the farther the better!

I am pretty handy with boat repairs, a good cook, and have completed ASA sailing courses through bare boat chartering.

I have a current passport, financially secure, and ready to go! PLease look at my profile and let me know if I can assist you in your travels!

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

I just wanted to add that I am VERY good at taking orders and do understand my place in the food chain after 20 years in the military(translated meaning that I realize that it is not MY boat and that I follow the orders of the person that does)!

I realized looking at the other posts that this seems to be a big problem when choosing crew.

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

Hi Sonia,

I would love to be able to help you out but I am needing some more experience too. I don't want to discourage you but your boat is old and a little small to be going off shore in. I just sold my 1966 Grampian 31 for that reason and purchased a Dufour 31.

Some things to think about. How old are your through hull fittings and standing rigging? Same for your sails and running rigging. Is your engine up to the trip? If you find someone to help you what would you do if they have to depart? Can you do it on your own?

The reason I ask you these questions is that is what keeps me from jumping on my Dufour and heading south myself!

That is why I am trying to crew for someone to gain some experience and maybe next year be able to do it on my own boat!

Lastly it is getting pretty late in the year to start our from as far North as New Jersey!

Tell me a little more about your trip please.

Garth

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

I was held up because of emergency surgery and wanted to leave much earlier. She handled very well in 2 storms recently, it confirmed her rigging and sails, we caught some gusts up to 25k. Her engine is sound, has been running 2 to 8 hour shifts for about 2 months while sailing her in the sound. She made Hell gate like a champ. She has a handheld GPS, 2 anchors and all required safety devices.

I am currently in Sandy Hook which means the only main concern is the coastal passage to get onto the ICW. I also have insurance and SEATow insurance which will be helpful on the ICW because of her 5,5ft draft.

I have been living aboard for 3 months and she is solid. She was on the hard for serious maintenance before that, keel reinforced, engine serviced and parts replaced etc

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

It sounds like you have your stuff together! You probably need someone on board with a little more experience than I have!

If you come down the intercoastal my Dufour is at Ensign services marina on the Nuese River. I am about 1/4 mile off the ICW and there are many affordable marina's to stop and rest for a day or two. Would love to meet you.

Gusts to 25k isn't really a storm.

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

Hi Tnelson,

I am helping Seafinn take his boat across to the Bahamas earlier in the month so I am not sure if I will be back and ready by the 18th BUT I would love to help if I can.

Garth

PS. to the other poster: I think we can all agree that gusts to 25 knots is NOT a storm! ha ha

Re: Ready to go south NOW!

Hi all,

Looks like I have a couple of great opportunities open in December that will keep me tied up. I will be on one of the big Carnival Cruise ships (Freedon) from Jan 11 to Jan 18. Maybe some of you will be on board with us and we can look at the sailboats and wish we were on THEM!

I am anxious and excited about the opportunities in front of me and am looking for more!

I am going to post a new thread so that people do not have to swim through all of these posts to send an inquiry! Glad that YOU stuck it out!

Send me a line!

Garth

I agree and need to give her a call like I promised. Sonia, are you still considering moving your boat, or have you changed your mind?

Lol I agree, I meant sailing in 25 gusts. The storms were more brutal
