Re: Ocean Work Next week, PNW the real thing.

For all of you that have responded, you are now on my "list". When plans firm up on day and (weather window looks good) I will PM you. We will need two more crew. The whole affair should only take two days, and I will pay for transport back (train) or perhaps park a truck down there.

Re: Ocean Work Next week, PNW the real thing.

We have XM weather for our chartplotter and it gives the wave hight and period out at least 100 miles and I can watch low pressure areas with short periods and high waves come ashore for at least 48 hours. I have found that wave periods less than 12 secounds and waves less than half the period are board line comfortable to sail or motor in, just my openion. In July the periods will be 12 to 16 seconds and the waves less than half and almost 1/3 the period lots more comfortable off shore. I have noticed that wave periods of less than 10 seconds more frequently have more than 5 ft waves and makes a choppy uncomfortable trip. Good luck getting a good weather window .

Re: Ocean Work Next week, PNW the real thing.

Here are a few links that I keep on my iphone. They are useful in coming down the coast. You will have cell coverage for most of your trip and certainly near all bar crossings.

Bar cams:
NOAA's National Weather Service Bar Cameras

Columbia Bar buoy (currently down)
NDBC - Station not found down)

Clatsop Spit buoy
NDBC - Station 46243

Astoria Canyon buoy
NDBC - Station 46248

Passage weather
Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers - PassageWeather

IR satellite loop
West Conus IR Loop - Satellite Services Division - Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution

NOAA coastal
Coastal Waters Forecast for Waters from Cape Shoalwater WA to Cascade Head OR from 10 to 60 nm (PZZ270)

Safe trip. Maybe see you in Ilwaco this summer.

Re: Ocean Work Next Week - PNW the Real Thing

OK guys, Lets be looking at the weekend of May 25, 26 and 27 and or 28 (Memorial Day). How many of you could make it that weekend? Straight Shooter should be back on board, and I will arrange transport.
For those that live in Oregon, if you want me to pick you up in Tacoma (rail station?) and get you to Neah bay, we can do that. If fact, I think I will bring my big pickup which could haul 5 with gear up easily.
Long range weather is hard to tell right now, but the swells seem to be decreasing, as is normal for this time of year.
Plan is to go 30 miles offshore in a large arch, and hit the incoming tide at the Columbian Bank.

Newt I'd love to help if you have room. I live in Longview and can get tickets for friday the 25th toTacoma for whichever train I need to be on I will have a friend get me in Astoria when done. I think I've PM my contact info. I have full foul weather gear and am happy to bring or contribute toward provisions

You know what, this is great helpful forum, most of I assume don't know each other, but your all willing to stop what what your doing and go help a fellow cruiser. I love it. It's almost like being on the beach of a river in Alaska fishing, most everyone offers help to a new guy or someone in trouble.

Re: Ocean Work Next Week - PNW the Real Thing

This week would be a Great week to sail the PNW. We're getting three plus consecutive days of sunshine for the first time since early last fall.

I'm extremly lightheaded but have worked my exposure rate up to almost two hours of direct sunlight before I must return indoors for naps.

Just take deep, regular breaths, John. You'll get used to it (the Sun) after a while.
