Oahu to the Big Island and Back in October

I'll be sailing from Oahu about the 7th of October for the Big Island of Hawaii. That leg is upwind and will be non-stop for 2 to 3 days. Then a 3 to 5 day stop at the Big Island for touring.

I will island hop back to Oahu with stops for snorkeling and diving along the way. I expect the return to take a week or so.

Looking for one or two volunteer crew to help keep an eye out for traffic and help with anchoring and docking.

Non-smokers, and, of course, no drugs.

Cheers,

Carl

Carl,
Sounds like a fun cruise (except for crossing the Alenuihaha TWICE ) and would love to go, but as usual my impeccable sense of timing places it right in the middle of 6 weeks I will be off island! Are you planning any others afterwards? Where is Aphrodite moored? I'm at La Mariana.

Regards,
Berndt

Aloha Carl,
Do you mind if I publish your request at our Yacht Club in Hilo? There might be someone who would like the experience.
Some of us will be flying over to Maui to pick up our International Folkboat and sail it back to Hilo soon.
I assume that you will be going to Kailua-Kona?
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Berndt (how do you pronounce that, btw?),

I'm only crossing that channel on the downwind run. I expect to be tacking in to the Big Island from the south. Haven't quite decided whether I'll head for Kailua-Kona or Hilo: I have a friend who owns a 10 acre farm in Captain Cook who will extend some hospitality (and whom I owe a sail), so even if I put into Hilo first so I can visit the volcano, I will still go around to Kailua-Kona before heading back to Oahu.

I'll be cruising throughout October, but then I'm going to have to lay the boat up until I head for Tahiti in April.

John,

Feel free to publicize my invitation, and thanks!

Sounds like a good plan, especially since you mentioned that Aphrodite doesn't point that well, and sailing past the volcano on the return would be spectacular. Anyways, since I can't make it, there's another guy in the marina here that would be interested. Send me an e-mail pukawai@cox.net with a phone number since he's not really computer-literate, or you can give him a call: George - (808) 554-5764

Man, wish I would have seen this earlier. I would have loved to do this.

I'll be watching next time you plan on doing this.

What was the total time away?

Aloha Carl,

Your sail made our club's newsletter this month. Will you give folks here on the forum an update on your adventure?

Four members of our club are sailing our newly acquired International Folkboat from Lahaina to Hilo just now. They told me that they were thinking of going the windward (Northern) side of Maui and then sailing Southeast to Hilo. I never recommend that route because you are sailing directly into the trades for a longer distance and told them they could do what they like but i would come South of Maui and then through the channel past Hawi and then East to Hilo.

Kind Regards,
JohnL

Aloha Sean,
The post you saw was from a year ago. Carl didn't make the cruise because he started around the North (windward) side of the islands and got beat back. I don't know if he is still monitoring forum mail.
