Talking looking for a boat Spain-Central America Oct 12

Hi,

I'm looking to cross the Atlantic around October 2012 heading to Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua or somewhere nearby for traveling and volunteering in renewable energy installations projects. I'm 28, easy going with motivation and adventurous spirit

have no sailing experience, but keen to learn all sorts, can help, cook, enjoy mechanical works, playing music on anything that gets into my hands.

my Couchsurfing profile says a bit more, here it is:

Can also outbound from other locations in Europe if necessary, pretty much anywhere where I could get to without having to fly, which I'm trying to avoid.

Please contact me if you think we can cooperate

piechu2@o2.pl

Saludos!!!

Re: looking for a boat Spain-Central America Oct 12

In Nov there is an event called ARC taking off from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Many boats depart for the other side at the same time. I think there is between 200 and 300 boats leaving Nov/Dec each year. Maybe 10% of this number takes extra crew.

Some people hitch a ride to the other side (the boats go to Sta Lucia first, then fewer of them continue to West Caribbean). Very few hitchhikers get a 'free' ride as this requires strong skills and is normally pre-arranged. Most pay the ride. Walking the docks, smart socialising and strong PR skills go a long way towards finding one's opportunity to cross on one of the boats.

Beware that when you arrive somewhere by boat and want / have to sign off, then you may be required to present some form of a return ticket to the authorities. It is not a rule everywhere but it is good to investigate beforehand. This implies having enough money in the pocket for paying the ride there AND BACK.

Good luck,
b.

Thanks so much for the valuable advice, Nov/Dec is also very good for me to head off and probably calmer on the Atlantic these months...
I´ll keep on searchin as I´m very keen to do it! The sea is calling me
best of luck for you too,
