Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
MareNostrum,
Thanks. You would like Aleutia. He is an amazing dog and an excellent security officer.
I understand why many people don't like picking up after a dog, just don't understand why those people would ever sail on a boat with one, or why some feel it so important to make a public issue of criticizing those who think an occasional simple task is worth having one on board. It's OK. There are plenty of sailors who do like dogs on board.
When I get to Mexico, probably this coming winter, would love to get together for a beer.

Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
Reviving this crew search thread!
Now in Ilwaco, Washington, on the hard for mast maintenance, (pulled both of them out), through-hulls, and getting ready for offshore. Expect one to two months work before crossing the Columbia River Bar to head south. Plan on harbor hopping down Oregon and California coast to get to San Diego by fall, then on to Mexico, possibly with the Baha Haha.
Found great crew for Portland to Ilwaco, short trip, but good shake down. One or two of them may continue down the coast. Have room for one or two more, depending on who stays on. Prefer someone with offshore experience but not absolutely essential if current crew stays on.
Please look at my prior posts for what I am looking for. There are many who find my request not to their liking, particularly because I have a dog on board. Clearly, there are also skilled mariners who don't at all mind my conditions, as proven by great crew for the short shake-down.
I am still looking for short hop, or long term possible crew, as our timing might match up. This is just the start of an extensive voyage. If interested, please take the time to tell me a little about yourself. I don't sail with strangers who don't take the time to get to know each other.

Good luck in your search, wish I could go. Like dogs and cats and people.

I am kind of side tracking your thread, but I wanted to say, I'm glad you found some suitable crew at least for the first leg. I also finally took a decent picture of Smoke, and wanted to show you. Good luck on your search and journey.

Hi Captain58,
Nice to hear from you. Smoke looks like a good boat dog. Obviously one of Aleutia's cousins. Aleutia is getting used to it now that we have a couple moves done.
We are in between two Skookum's, here in the yard at Ilwaco. One is a factory built sailing fish boat with ten ton hold, 58 foot, I think. Very nice design. The other is a Skookum 53(?) sail boat converted to fishing boat... we will see how that works out in practice. He put a high wheel house on it, so will probably get a lot of roll, but built it with fiberglass honeycomb, so weight is not near the problem as windage and hull shape is. Good yard here!
You got your boat ready for the season yet?

Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
No, I have to say, I am not ready yet, life stuff. The current engine has been dismantled to the degree needed for removal, and it is ready to pull. When I get home from work this time I'll have 2 months in the summer to pull the engine and reduction gear, and put the replacements in so I guess, I'm looking at next summer for the big shove off. I'll be done before then, and will perform a bunch of sea trails (fishing trips). I have the pilot house model and she is quite steady underway, I am looking forward to next year's tuna season. If we get an el nino, I won't have to go to far to find the Albacore. Smoke is the wonder dog, wicked smart and way good watch dog, though he does tend to get distracted by the Magpies that like to torment him. He has gone one on one with a bull moose and stood the moose down. He also has mixed it up with a black bear and ran him off, so there is nothing wrong with his courage, though one might question his good sense. And no we did not deliberately put him in harms way. We live in the woods and sometimes the unexpected happens.
