Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
Good luck on finding the right crew, they are as frequent as hen's teeth. Me, I don't see a problem other than those that need to kick something whether interested or not. The man is advertising a position available with what is expected, if it is not your cup of tea, shove off. I am going to be content sailing with my dog, forget about the crew. Smoke is smarter than a good percentage of the posters I see on this site.

Hi Vino,
I live in WA state and wouldn't mind hitting the sea. I too, have a dog. I'm a great cook and not afraid to get my hands dirty.
I've sailed about 3 times. So I can consider myself a rookie or newbie. But my work ethics and skill level with most everything else may fit in your needs.

There is not any problem on that boat.
The problem exist only in this thread.
And it is not OP's problem.
OP still is quite polite, given the circumstances...

Of course! The dog is always more important! If you have ever had a dog in your life, that goes without saying.
Additionally, this particular dog is an excellent crew filter. As an ex-SAR dog, he might even save your arse when you fall overboard while cleaning up his ****.
What a beautiful symbiotic experience that would be!!

Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
Some dogs make better crew than some humans. I just don't like sailing with animals of any kind regardless of their background. I think you've heard from some other folks who are like minded. Shame on them for being anti crewdog.
I have a dog that I love dearly but I'd never subject her to the sea and expect her to be good helpful crew. She would be useless at making meals or reefing or standing a watch.
I wouldn't be upset with folks because they don't want a dog placed as an equal or superior crewmember and certainly wouldn't expect crew to care for my dog as much as I do. It takes a special human to crew with someone who has a dog aboard and you may or may not find one.
Good luck to you.

Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
Thank you Vino for considering the cat! I would just say beware of the "great cooks, who don't know sailing but don't mind their hands dirty" as per one of the repliers. Other than that good luck with the interviewing! Personally I would let the dog to do the dirty work (cat in my case) - smell out the people so you don't have to.
Just a quick question: why Vino The Dog? Your dog ain't an alcoholic I am sure, nor Vino is a human, is he? So you might want to change that handle and the rest is fine. Judging by your art work you have more patience with wood than with people but people is a tough material, you know. You too, sound like. Take care, my cat told me he is not a sailor, besides he's got all the tuna he can handle here at home and does not see the point. I can't blame him.

Re: Interviewing for crew Portland, Or to Mexico then beyond
I have read this entire column, and i find myself asking WTF? Are there really trolls on a cruising board? Some people seem to act like this is the first time animals have been on a boat. If cleaning up dogshit seems crazy to you, have you ever cleaned out a grey water tank? or an anchor locker? or shoveled manuer out of a barn? Or scrap barnacles off of a hull? Like what's the big deal is it to uncomfortable for you? Is sailing supposed to be a luxurious experience for you? To bad cats hate water and dogs can swim.

Don't really see the need for experience shovelling manure out of the barn, but yeah the other points are valid. I'd work them into the questionnaire, but we've never got beyond question two.

You do what's needed for the good of the ship. Including shoveling.

A better guess than I'd have imagined, but not really.

How would you react if you happened to see a naked lady on the boat?
Not really been able to come up with any awesome answers yet, tho, for the multiple choice.
