I need to get on a boat

I live in Hawai(Oahu) and I really want to break into sailing. I want my own sailboat someday, but I've never touched one before and I want to change that. I really don't know thing one about sailing, although I'm trying to find books and stuff on the subject. I know it's something you can only learn by experience and that's what I want.
I work during the week and usually get weekends off, so I can only do evenings and weekends, but I'll work for free if that's what it takes. I've always been good at learning new things, and I'm often accused of being pretty smart. Unfortunately though, I'm kind of married to my job(military), so I can't go on adventures.
