Hudson River

I am planning a sailing trip from Atlantic Highlands, NJ up the Hudson River in August. I'm not sure how far I will go, but am planning on 3 - 4 days total. Does anyone have any recommendations re. marinas (I'd like to grab a mooring for overnights), river currents, river traffic, sights, navigation, etc.?

Re: Hudson River

is estuarial and so does have incoming and outgoing tidal changes. is 180 miles from NYC to catskill. goood luck and smooth sailing-- there is much beauty on the hudson. i learned to sail there in catskill from the creek north and south. have fun!!!

Re: Hudson River

I tend to anchor rather than head into a marina. I have taken a mooring in Nyack just north of the Tappen Zee bridge, But, I usually anchor off of Hook Mountain just slightly north of there. Good holding and just beautiful spot in the Fall. Further up Kingston is a good spot to dock if your mast can fit under the bridge. I had 52 feet and it looked close but, that was from the deck perspective. Check the charts. They sometimes have live music on the waterfront. It's a funky "trendy" town. In Catskill I dropped the mast for a trip up through the Erie Canal so I was motoring beyond that point. So I can't comment on the sailing. But, I would recommend you ride with the tide for your trip.
