Galveston Bound

Just finished a solo hop from Boot Key to Pensacola. Headed to Galveston Bay next.
It looks like a few days of fair winds ahead but it will likely not be a walk in the park.

While my plan at present is to solo and heave to for rest, hardy crew would be welcome.

Take extra care to be visible to all the highspeed crewboats, shrimpers, other fishing boats, and freighters that operate in those waters (assuming you refer to going offshore instead of using the GICW). There is a lot more traffic than near lower FL.

Thanks for the input. I have traveled those waters quite a bit over the years and am in full agreement. I added a Class B AIS transponder a while back in order to make my vessel even more visible to commercial traffic. Even with that I always call for confirmation via vhf. Seldom get a reply from the shrimpers.

Re: Galveston bound

We just got back to Texas, and hanging out at Harborwak Marina for awhile. Look us up when you get here. I thought you had a lady on board, from reading your posts?

Carry plenty of diesel.....but you probably know that already.

Will do. My lady and her niece bailed in Goodland. Left the cat though.

Re: Galveston Bound

Slight change in plans. Going to back cruise mode. Decided to hit a few ports on the way.

I have not been to Grand Isle since the early 80's and never on a lark. Got here yesterday afternoon. Did laundry and oil change on engine and tranny.

Plan to head out tomorrow with the outgoing tide.

Galveston Bound

Bit the bullet and sailed straight through. The hairiest part of the trip was when a squall hit halfway through the jetties at Galveston. 4 am, sleep deprived, surrounded by boats transiting both in and out while my radar was useless in the pounding rain.

Followed the bright stern lights of a tug in front of me and my plotter until we were above Pelican Cut and dropped the hook a couple hundred yards from the ship channel for a much needed 4 hour nap.

I am sitting under the ac in a slip in Bayland Marina looking forward to kicking back a day or 2.
